Marooned in the center of the field a group of photographers made a forlorn effort to take motion pictures of the cheer leaders as they slip and slide up and down the side lines.
Haughton Watches Game
Among the most interested of the 50,000 spectators was P. D. Haughton '99, founder of the Harvard system, who took a vacation from his duties at Columbia, to watch the Harvard Yale struggle in the Stadium.
With Hammond outkicking Neale and Harvard stopping Yale's much vaunted attack by a new system of defense most of the playing of the first half was in Yale territory. Coach Fisher and his assistants have developed a defense, playing seven men on the line of scrimmage; which Yale had not yet been able to solve.
But Yale had been more alert and had recovered all its own fumbles and one of Harvard's which led directly to Yale's score. At the very moment when Harvard seemed to have at last placed itself in position to score, Yale snatched its opportunity and scored its first touchdown in the Stadium since 1909.
THIRD PERIOD
The teams started the second half with Deaver in for Luman and Hart for Bingham.
The Harvard team returned to the field with dry jerseys without numbers, and with Combs at left end, and Lee at quarter. Mallory kicked off to Cheek, who ran back to the 30 yard line. Hammond punted to Yale's 25 yard line.
Neale kicked to Harvard's 43 yard line. Hammond's punt was blocked by Blair and it was Yale's ball on Harvard's 15 yard line.
Richeson went through the line for no gain. Yale, offside, was penalized five yards. With one down and 15 yards to go Pond was nailed by four Harvard players for no gain.
Yale Scores on Placement
Stevens was thrown for a three yard loss by Combs. With 17 yards to go on third down Pond was tackled by Evans on the 18 yard line. Yale prepared for a placement kick, Richeson holding the ball for Mallory, who sent the ball squarely between the goal posts. Score: Yale 10, Harvard 0.
Eastman kicked off to Mallory, who ran back to his own 30 yard line, where he was tackled by Combs. Stevens then kicked to Harvard's 25 yard line. Time out, Pond hurt. Cottle was sent in to take his place and miller went in for Blair.
Second Place Kick Falls
Harvard, with the ball on the 25 yard line, kicked to Yale's 38 yard line. Stevens immediately punted back to Harvard's five yard line, Hart touching it down. Hammond's next punt went only to his won 28 yard line. Stevens was tackled by Dunker for a one yard loss. On a buck through center, Cottle was again driven through center. On the fourth down Mallory attempted a place kick, which failed and Cheek caught the ball on Harvards 15 yard line.
