On the first play Neale was tackled by Hill for no gain. Neale kicked to Yale's 33 yard line. On the first play Cheek fumbled and. Pond recovered, running 63 yards for a touchdown. Mallory kicked the goal. Score: Yale T. Harvard 9.
Eastman kicked off to Richeson, who ran the ball back to the 25 yard line and was then downed by Combs. With the ball on her own 25 yard line Yale opened up. Neale fumbled, but the ball was recovered by Lovejoy.
Cross Buck Play Falls
Starting again on the 20 yard line Neale kicked to Harvard's 40 yard line. Lee went through left tackle for 6 yards and Hammond punted to Yale's 10 yard line. Pond almost broke loose through the center of the line, gaining five yards. Pond then hit the line for two yards, and Neale punted high to the 40 yard line. Lee caught the ball and was stopped in his tracks by. Doe, Cheek carrying the ball, tore for three yards through left tackle. On an attempted cross buck Hammond fumbled, and the ball was recovered by Yale on her own 37 yard line.
Hammond promptly punted to Richeson on his own 25 yard line, and the latter was downed by Hubbard. Neale on an end play lost five yards, nailed behind the line by Coburn. McGlone was then sent in for Lee. Pond was able to gain only one yard on a right tackle play. Neale then punted to McGlone who was downed on the 26 yard line by Milstead.
With the ball on his 20 yard line and with second down and 15 yards to gain, Neale punted to the 40 yard line. Cheek failed to gain on a line play and Harvard offside, was penalized five yards. Hammond punted and the ball rolled over the goal line.
Neale Gets off Good Punt
The ball was carried out to the 20 yard gain and Pond made five yards through right tackle. Time was taken out while both teams mopped the mud off their faces. Neale then kicked out of bounds on Harvard's 35 yard line.
Hammond kicked to Yale's 12 yard line. On the first play Neale punted to the center of the field. Crosby was sent in to replace Combs. McGlone started a run around right end but was stopped for no gain. On an attempted punt Hammond fumbled, then picked up the ball and ran for eight yards around left end.
Hammond's next punt was more successful and went over the goal line, the ball being brought out to Yale's 20 yard line.
Neale punted to the center of the field. On the next play McGlone was stopped going through right tackle Hammond punted and the ball came to a standstill on Yale's one yard line.
Spalding Replaces McGlone
With firm footing Neale punted to Yale's 38 yard line. Spaulding was sent in for McGlone, and on the next play he passed to Hill, but the pass was grounded. The half ended. Score: Yale 7, Harvard 0.
By now, the field, the players and the spectators had become thoroughly waterlogged. Both teams were able to do little but go through the motions of football. With a slippery ball and a slippery field there had been little opportunity for anything but heavy punts and splashing line plays.
Between the halves the two rival bands seemed to have as much difficulty in executing their maneuvers as did the rival football teams. While both bands were forming their respective letters in the mud the trail of their formation was left behind in the field.
