Flyby Guesses: A Harvard Student’s Search History

('

{shortcode-6da31d5e98b74a439dbf8b65d993f18ae7519c79} Search history happens to be a closely guarded secret — it’s a ~window into our souls~. We all know that feeling when your friend grabs your phone and opens your browser — pure panic as every search you’ve done this week flashes before their eyes. They’ll know you searched for “Harry Potter fanfiction” and “how many states are there in the U.S.” (Obviously you knew it was 50 but just wanted confirmation.) The fear is too much to bear so you snatch your phone right back. Except now they’re even MORE curious.

\r\n\r\n

People hold their search histories close to their chest, but I think it’s a constructive exercise to try to guess someone’s searches. So here, I will try my hand at guessing yours, dear reader, so long as you’re an undergraduate at Harvard (we’re a predictable bunch).

\r\n\r\n

“What should I major in: personality quiz”

\r\n\r\n

One thing I discovered early on in my first semester: No one really knows what they want to do. The ones that supposedly do have roughly an 80 percent chance of changing their mind at least once by the time they graduate. The other 20 percent question their life decisions on the regular but are too lazy to switch paths at this point.

\r\n\r\n

“Finance jobs for people with a Folklore and Mythology degree”

\r\n\r\n

That Harvard name will get us somewhere, right?

\r\n\r\n

“How to tell people I go to Harvard without sounding pretentious”

\r\n\r\n

A struggle that is somewhat niche, but an awkwardness many of us have encountered time and time again. How do you say it politely without sounding pretentious? At this point, I just say I go to college in the Boston area and people don’t question it a whole lot.

\r\n\r\n

“Will I have a social life after getting quadded?”

\r\n\r\n

Sweetie, did you have one before getting quadded? But I assure you, you can.

\r\n\r\n

“What to do with my life now that I’m not pre-med”

\r\n\r\n

See: next item. But for starters, you actually have a life now. I get it — being a pre-med is hard and now you suddenly have all this time on your hands. Well, I admire you all for choosing that route in the first place.

\r\n\r\n

“How to get a job at McKinsey”

\r\n\r\n

Nepotism is a great place to start!

\r\n\r\n

“Is it possible to write a ten-page paper in four hours?”

\r\n\r\n

Ten pages is pushing it, but five? No problem. It’s been a busy week, and you’ve been putting off that paper for English 20, and then it hits you. That essay is … due? Like, really soon. Time to hunker down with some Red Bull and crank out a paper at an inhuman speed. You no longer know what words you’re writing, but, by god, this paper is going to be done by 11:59.

\r\n\r\n

“Why am I crying?”

\r\n\r\n

First things first, walk out of Lamont and into the sunlight. But in all seriousness, it’s okay if you’re overwhelmed — we’re all under a lot of stress. You got this, babe <3

\r\n\r\n

“Number of injuries by turkey 2021” or ”Can a college student take a turkey in a fight?”

\r\n\r\n

The turkeys prowl campus just waiting to harass the next unsuspecting victim innocently trying to enter Lamont. One would be crazy to not be terrified that one of those oversized birds would come for them next. And yet some particularly confident students think they absolutely could KO one of the campus turkeys. My advice? Don’t even try. Those things are machines, built for destruction and war. Avoid at all costs.

\r\n\r\n

“Is the Owl a birdwatching club?”

\r\n\r\n

Literally what else would it be?

\r\n\r\n

Well, there you have it. The search history of your average Harvard student. Of course, I could be wildly incorrect in my guesses for any given student on this campus, but I’d like to think I hit the mark for at least a few of you.

Flyby Ranks: Crosswalks Around Campus

('

{shortcode-3b85e006a502e6415edde754f82b0f6173b11801} Among the most overlooked parts of Harvard’s campus are its crosswalks. Crosswalks are essential to the way we move around. They keep us safe as we travel on foot to class and make sure we don’t get hit by bad drivers on Mass. Ave. But they are a lot more than that too. Each crosswalk has a different *vibe* that just makes it so unique. Read on to learn about Flyby’s favorite crosswalks on campus and why they’re the key to *romanticizing life*.

\r\n\r\n

Barker-Lamont crosswalk

\r\n\r\n

It’s giving English-concentrator-obsessed-with-dark-academia vibes. The direct path from Barker Center to the steps of Lamont just adds so much to the aesthetic of this crosswalk. The best feeling is crossing during autumn when the leaves crunch under your shoes and the Barker gates are majestically open ahead of you. If you want to somewhat romanticize your life instead of thinking of that midterm you have next week that you didn’t study for and don’t have the motivation to study for until the last minute panic sets in, try walking across this crosswalk! I highly recommend it.

\r\n\r\n

In front of Smith Campus Center

\r\n\r\n

Beautiful, immaculate, functional. Not only does this crosswalk actually have a pedestrian light, but it’s actually wide enough to comfortably walk across without passing too closely to other people. Its convenient location near the T, the Smith Campus Center, and the Yard makes it a crowd-favorite and a well-rounded queen. Use this crosswalk for the vibes as you flaunt your tote bag and casually walk into Smith to study with ~aesthetic lo-fi music~.

\r\n\r\n

The crosswalk by the Harvard Book Store

\r\n\r\n

The snow on either side of this crosswalk always seems to be the first to be cleared during blizzards. Rain, shine, snow—no matter what crazy weather Boston brings, this crosswalk is always there for you. Rustic, handy, and trustworthy. This crosswalk doesn’t need to try hard to be well-used and appreciated. It’s also on the way here to The Crimson, which gives it extra brownie points.

\r\n\r\n

The trio of crosswalks by Quincy St. and Harvard St.

\r\n\r\n

Why did the turkey cross the road? To be a menace to some innocent passersby, probably. The amount of times I’ve seen a turkey cross one of these three crosswalks is not even funny anymore. They causally strut across the carefully painted crosswalk like they own the place… Anyways, enough of my turkey slander. I will award some extra points because this trio makes me feel some type of way. Every time I walk across any of these three crosswalks, I have a main character moment. Picture this: it’s 7 PM, and it’s dark already. You’re hurrying back from yet another club meeting and crossing the street, when multiple cars approach the intersection from all three sides. They stop for you as you walk, bathed in the warm glow of their headlights. Just me?

\r\n\r\n

The crosswalk between the Harvard Dance Center and Currier

\r\n\r\n

I didn’t forget about the crosswalks in the quad, but I have thoughts. First of all, why does the light take so long to change??? I’ve literally waited five whole minutes in a snowstorm to no avail and then finally made up my mind to risk my life and just run across the street. This one even has a button you press to cross, but it does literally nothing. So I’m always having a staring contest with a random driver as I guiltily cross on a red light. Sorry, not sorry. It’s the button’s fault, and I’m impatient.

\r\n\r\n

Some crosswalks are nicer than others but we do love them all. Whether you use crosswalks to run to your 9 a.m. or you’re staging a photoshoot to recreate The Beatles’ “Abbey Road,” our crosswalks are an integral part of Harvard’s campus. Next time, take some time to appreciate (or silently judge) the crosswalk upon which you walk. Happy walking!

Flyby’s Official 2022 Housing Day Video Ranking

('

{shortcode-da30f0b1c3d3978ef04c866fd98bdbacccbeee34}Welcome back from break and welcome to our most-awaited and (admittedly) most-contentious piece of the year. The return to in-person Housing Day brings back new and better than ever Housing Day videos, but how do they stack up? We watched them all so you don’t have to. Here’s what some of our first-years think!

\r\n\r\n

Note: When you have 12 fabulous videos to choose from and lots of people with opinions, there is going to be some ~disagreement~. We know how hard every house works to film, edit, and produce these videos. This might be our final ranking, but we’ll admit there is a very valid case to be made for other orderings too. Flyby Blog is signing off here, but for all our fans, the comments are open for debate 👇🏽👇🏽

\r\n\r\n

The Gold:

\r\n\r\n

Quincy

\r\n\r\n

The winner of our Unofficial Housing Day Video Contest — QUINCY HOUSE! Right from the aerial shots to start, the editing and filming demonstrates nothing short of excellence. The lyrics are creative, informative, and overall, a bop. With Act I and Act II, “The People’s House” brought a thorough tour, a strong sense of community, and house pride until the end. #PenguinNation.

\r\n\r\n

Mather

\r\n\r\n

Mather’s video had excellent camera work, and the editing deserves applause. We particularly enjoyed watching all the different parts of Mather in which the video was filmed, with features from the Faculty Deans, HUDS employees, and pets! From creative lyrics to video snippets of students just having fun, “Mather — that’s all we’re on.”

\r\n\r\n

Lowell

\r\n\r\n

Can we say we’re surprised this video was absolutely amazing? True to its reputation, Lowell’s Housing Day video was nothing short of excellence. With a wholesome storyline, iconic dhall scenes, and lyrics that actually made sense, the video was easy to watch through to the end. The directing and editing was also great, with the telescope scene being our favorite!

\r\n\r\n

The Silver:

\r\n\r\n

Kirkland

\r\n\r\n

Kirkland takes a silver medal with three great songs, strong vocals, and ~quirky~ concepts. With faculty members, students, and a mascot decked out in Kirkland gear — Kirkland’s video makes any first-year student jealous of the house’s infamous community. We applaud them for choosing songs other than rap and the stellar camerawork!

\r\n\r\n

Currier

\r\n\r\n

Currier’s video had a distinct beginning than the other Housing Day Videos. With intense animation and a voiceover, this video really gets your attention and then makes sure you stay watching! While they may have chosen one of many rap songs this year, this Currier pulled through with great rhythm and energy that may even make you regret not getting quadded!

\r\n\r\n

Dunster

\r\n\r\n

Dunster comes in sixth with a Gen-Z approved song choice and a throwback, wholesome shots along the river, and features from HUDS employees! With cool illustrations, house pride, and an adorable opening from the Faculty Deans, Dunster House truly came together to show us that dark wood paneling and meese >>>.

\r\n\r\n

The Bronze:

\r\n\r\n

Eliot

\r\n\r\n

Introductory text to explain the situation was useful for freshmen, and the video starts out with strong — hype — energy. The snowball fight was a cute add-on, the house tour was gorgeous, and the lyrics & rhythm were entertaining. We wish this video would’ve dropped a little earlier, but with great camera work and good vibes, Eliot comes in with a solid ranking overall.

\r\n\r\n

Cabot

\r\n\r\n

With a music video AND a skit, this video had great shots and a cool concept. The lyrics and vocals were top tier, and somehow Cabot made the shuttle rides… aesthetic? Why are we convinced that the Quad-SEC Direct is the best part about getting quadded? Either way, Cabot succeeded in selling us on the #quadlife.

\r\n\r\n

Leverett

\r\n\r\n

Oh Leverett, we love your community! The censoring was hilarious and the transitions between songs were satisfying. It was just as good as scrolling on TikTok. As the only video to feature some Spanish, we give you points for being multicultural. The green bunny ears radiate positive energy, the carrot man in Berg was entertaining, and the love for Lev is evident!

\r\n\r\n

The Honorable Mentions:

\r\n\r\n

Pfoho

\r\n\r\n

The polar bears were in sync and adorable and turned an Industry Baby scene that was the opposite of wholesome into the definition of it. We wish we could have spent more time learning about the different amenities and common spaces in Pfoho, but the post scene and extended saxophone cuts added character so we appreciate the effort!

\r\n\r\n

Adams

\r\n\r\n

Adams gets bonus points for a storyline, capturing the freshman energy well, and for taking a unique approach to their video compared to other houses! With lighting techniques and solid camera work, this video definitely captured Adams pride and highlighted its famous dark academia-esque architecture.

\r\n\r\n

Winthrop

\r\n\r\n

Winthrop House brings puppies, babies, subtitles, the Winthrop lion, and the most wholesome song selections. We wonder if this video was filmed on an iPhone 6, but regardless, the number of people involved featured in it only proves how much Winthrop students love their community and their many river-facing courtyards!

\r\n\r\n

With creative lyrics that tastefully shade other houses, more music videos than ever before, and hype mashups, we’re convinced that every house is a good one. We can’t wait to see what’s in store for us next year — the Class of 2025 is beyond hyped for house life already, and we are grateful to all the houses for giving us a Housing Day to remember forever!

All About Housing

\r\n\r\n

Leverett’s (Lev’s) claim to fame is that it’s the largest upperclassman house, housing more undergraduate students than any other. It’s composed of McKinlock Hall (recently renovated in 2014) and the 12-story F and G towers. HoCo co-chair Austin C. Ma ’24, a resident of the towers, says that tower rooms are impressively spacious with huge bedrooms, windows, and great views of the Charles. He shared that his “window is almost ceiling to floor!”

\r\n\r\n

{shortcode-b555570a7fe863b77507ea1ac67dda76b59c8d36}

\r\n\r\n

This is true for both singles and suites in Leverett House; gigantic common rooms are great for hosting parties, meanwhile single bedrooms can each be described as the size of “two Canaday rooms” (I’m sure that means something to some of you freshmen). HoCo co-chair Audrey H. Kang ’24—who lives in the recently renovated McKinlock Hall—assures us that Lev’s rooms and facilities are in great condition and are very clean.

\r\n\r\n

{shortcode-3374cce7c4952004afd01c33432a9fd7ff25a3a3}

\r\n\r\n

Lev’s HoCo takes full advantage of the house’s many available spaces. With a beautiful courtyard, Leverites have tons of fun making their own apple cider during the house’s cider-making event. The Rabbit Hole is a popular common space where students can procrastinate their p-sets by spending hours at the pool table or performing culinary experiments in the kitchen. For performing artists, the Library Theater is home to Lev's stage, meanwhile musicians can practice their piano skills at the many—and regularly tuned—pianos stationed around the House. And if you don't feel like making the trek to Widener or Lamont, hole yourself up in the House’s personal library to get some work done, conveniently located in its courtyard.

\r\n\r\n

Quirks & Perks

\r\n\r\n

If you're an anxious freshman worrying about being labeled a Lev bunny for the next three years don’t. It’s true: Harvard’s largest house boasts a bunny—or hare—as its mascot with it’s green and yellow flag proudly displaying three bunnies on its shield. And it’s not a coincidence. Fun fact: subtracting one ‘t” from Leverett to make it “Leveret” will actually give you the term for a baby hare. If you’re a prospective humanities concentrator who appreciates a good pun, then maybe this will make you manifest getting Lev a little extra.

\r\n\r\n

{shortcode-414fbe42c75166048f5e41d88e6da47f37b6177a}

\r\n\r\n

If walls could speak, McKinlock’s walls would be able to recite some of the wisdom that earned Amanda Gorman her spot at Biden’s inauguration. And if you’re a certified gym bro, find motivation in the Jeremy Lin photo staring down at you inside the Lev gym, daring you to quit your set halfway through. Add John Roberts—the nation’s current Chief Supreme Court Justice—, Pete Buttigeg, and Cornel West and you really can’t top this mix of notable house alumni.

\r\n\r\n

{shortcode-46c6a208bd7509357c2b6ec243b1c7820c3822ab}

\r\n\r\n

Lev HoCo chairs are already hard at work. Kang shares that regardless of whether future semesters permit in-person or virtual events, HoCo remains committed to creating recreational and bonding events for the Lev community, promising to “try to make it as fun as possible”. If Harvard’s sorting hat grants you Lev, freshmen can look forward to weekly steins — with themes like Valentine’s Day, the Super Bowl, Jefes vs. Felipes — in addition to seasonal events like ice skating and Spring formal, and an annual finals week tradition known as “Donut Dash”, where caffeine-dependent students can enjoy free donuts while trying to de-stress among fellow House residents. Ma notes the creativity of past steins and mentions a delicious Oreo tasting event: “[the past HoCo chairs] went and bought like 16 flavors of Oreos. It was great.”

\r\n\r\n

Your Questions, Answered

\r\n\r\n

How would you guys describe your House’s community or spirit?

\r\n\r\n

AK: A lot of people show up to steins and events, which is really fun. I think that one of the best things about upcoming Housing Day is that Austin and I are seeing how much people want to get involved! We’ll send out emails like “who wants to get involved with the Housing Day video and merch?”, and we'll get so many replies from people saying they are interested. I think having such a large house is great, because when the opportunity arises, there are all these people who are interested in taking part — there's always something for everyone.

\r\n\r\n

ACM: We're a very friendly house. Being a large house, you’ll always run into someone just randomly walking around in the d-hall or something like that. But everyone's always so friendly. And this also includes all of our tutors and all of our dining hall staff. It's just a very, very friendly space, and… good vibes!

\r\n\r\n

{shortcode-a045ad74fc04e736fadf01933ed1fbc3c15bde1d}

\r\n\r\n

What is something freshmen can look forward to?

\r\n\r\n

AK: I think they can look forward to getting involved. I think that if there's something freshmen want, they can just literally join HoCo and they can very easily get their voice heard. I would say that's the best thing about Lev. Something I noticed when I first came in as a sophomore was how much influence you can have over events, even as someone who is new to the house. I think that's what stood out a lot, especially post-pandemic. I think freshmen, if you want something from Lev, Lev can probably give you it. You just need to speak up about it and it'll happen.

\r\n\r\n

What do you think makes Lev special?

\r\n\r\n

AK: If there's something you want, you have more freedom to do it in Leverett than you do anywhere else. Austin and I are open to all ideas and we have the spatial and financial capabilities to do literally anything that students want to do! If you're looking for a house that you can really make your own, I think Leverett is a really good choice.

\r\n\r\n

Kang leaves us with this: “No one has ever complained about living in Leverett."

Leverett House

('

Boasting the title of the largest House, Lev is full of bustling bunnies with lasting traditions led by a tight-knit House Committee. From the sophomore concentration celebrations to the huge senior dinner, Leverett is full of love to give and share for every class year. You’ll find yourself having to stop and admire Leveretts’s 14 story towers anytime you walk past, and you’ll likely be enticed into spending a good portion of your afternoon in their beautiful courtyard.

\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n

Quirks & Perks

\r\n\r\n

If you don’t already know someone in Lev, chances are, you will soon! Leverett is the largest House at Harvard and boasts a community that is just as spirited as it is large. The first thing you might notice about Lev is their love of their mascot, the hare. Fun fact: baby hares are called leverets, so Lev’s mascot is actually a pun!

\r\n\r\n

Lev is all about frequent community events, from slam poetry to the interactive cooking series, Lev Loves to Cook, there’s usually something fun and engaging going on in the House during any given week. If you’re curious about the ~vibes~ of Leverett, look no further than their Housing Day videos. Their 2020 Housing Day video, set to Billie Eilish’s “Bad Guy,” came out just a couple of days before students left campus last March and was truly show stopping. From quips like, “Size matters, don’t you know?” to subtle flexes about their IM records, the video featured lots of bunny ears, bunny costumes, and people scaling traffic lights in a bunny-like way. Each year, Lev’s video only gets more creative and hype; if you’re sorted into this House, you could be the next star of the show. Former HoCo chair Riley E. “Liz” Hoveland ’21 describes the dedicated creators behind the video, Leverett’s HoCo, as family and noted that there is a unique tradition of chairs staying with the House Committee after their term.

\r\n\r\n

{shortcode-1589e505387e4b37b74f9ec7b6beaf7807524b38}

\r\n\r\n

House faculty are full of Lev love, too! You’ll usually be greeted at Lev’s entrance by Paul, the building manager who is accessible and supportive. Hoveland shared a standout memory when she first learned about the great campus evictions of March 2020 while sitting in Paul’s office. She recalls being comforted by his presence when she was crying after the shocking news. Born and raised in Boston, Paul will make you feel right at home every time you enter Leverett. For freshmen looking to dive into their House’s community, there’s truly no better House than Leverett.

\r\n\r\n

Staying Connected

\r\n\r\n

Although the virtual world has its challenges, Leverett has been keeping the house spirit alive with creative virtual events with free perks, like the Tea Club, which sends participants samples of different teas each month, or art workshops with materials furnished by the House. Hoveland dropped a hint of an upcoming event involving books, but wouldn’t tell us exactly what. Guess the future bunnies will have to let us know! If you’re the sorry-I-would-but-I-have-a-pset type, fret not! Lev also hosts “power hours” for bunnies that are procrastinating. “So, if you need to write that essay and you’re like me and get distracted by TikTok easily, it’s a good accountability space”, Hoveland says. Lev’s HoCo also has kept an active Instagram page (@LeverettHouse), which highlights students, pets, and faculty to keep followers updated on all things Lev during this remote year.

\r\n\r\n

{shortcode-69fbcf71c9c7846e56e185f882175d71161f0716}

\r\n\r\n

For first-years nervous about finding a family, the people you’ll meet at Leverett House are what makes the House truly something special, as Hoveland made sure to emphasize. “It’s not the buildings that make the House,” she notes, It's the people. And, the people in Leverett are the best people I’ve met at Harvard, and arguably some of the best people I’ve ever met.” Dang. Consider us impressed!

The largest House has no shortage of housing options for incoming bunnies! Sophomores are generally housed in the recently-renovated McKinlock Hall, the main Lev building that has the dining hall. Hoveland herself was housed in DeWolfe’s apartment-style housing during her sophomore year and loved having a kitchen to cook her own meals. However, she explains that the McKinlock set-up is also perfect for picking up meals and snacks during a busy week, since you can grab breakfast in your PJs without putting on any shoes on a lazy weekend morning (or when you’re running late to that horribly early Monday 9 a.m. class).

\r\n\r\n

{shortcode-476c141fb3579bc5fb45b3c1e364284d49582a17}

\r\n\r\n

Juniors and seniors tend to be housed in spacious rooms with lots of singles in Lev’s towers. These are ideal for bigger blocking groups to stay on one floor together, instead of being split up like they would in many other Houses. If you have a large friend group, you’ll want to cross your fingers for Lev, because you just might be able to spend your time with all of them. The top floors are especially sought after because these rooms also overlook the scenic Charles with walls that are practically windows. New Leverites will also be pleasantly surprised by the hidden nooks and study spaces that dot Lev’s many hallways and rooms.

\r\n\r\n

Your Questions, Answered

\r\n\r\n

If all the amenities above didn’t already entice you to be a bunny, fear not. We asked the HoCo chairs those burning questions so that you didn’t have to. Get excited for your future House, full of fun and family:

\r\n\r\n

What is one thing you want freshmen to know about your House?

\r\n\r\n

LEH: “The tutors are amazing and the support system you have is unmatched. We have tutors who were in Lev as students 14 years ago and are still in Lev as tutors because they love it so much. We have a lot of families so you really get to watch the kids grow up … We have a lot of cute pets and some great dogs... If you want a family, a good support system, and an amazing alumni network, Lev is the place for you.

\r\n\r\n

What do you think makes your House special?

\r\n\r\n

LEH: The people who work at Leverett are the best people you will ever meet, from the HUDS staff, to Amy, our House administrator, to Katie and Kim, who are our resident dean and our academic coordinator, and Paul, who’s our building manager ... You get to experience these people, and you get to really, really get to know them ... When we were told we were getting kicked off [last spring], [Bon Lee, who swipes students into the dhall] was immediately like ‘I got to friend you on Facebook’ and wanted to stay connected!

\r\n\r\n

{shortcode-4d3af434e645011e6277799b4f51c9c2d4c9f0f8}

\r\n\r\n

Biggest misconception about your House?

\r\n\r\n

LEH: Everyone thinks Leverett is boring… honestly, people think bad about Leverett because they haven't experienced Leverett. Maybe on the outside it seems huge, like a ton of people, you don’t really get to know anyone… But if you actively put in the time to get to know people, you will be able to have amazing connections with everyone... There are people who have been working in that House for longer than I have been alive... Seeing other people love Leverett makes you love Leverett.

\r\n\r\n

What Hogwarts House would your House get sorted into?

\r\n\r\n

LEH: We’re Hufflepuff! I think we are the nicest people ... It’s a good House, you really just feel welcomed in and feel like you’re at home.

The Best Blocking Group Names from the Class of 2025

('

{shortcode-5b08ec80e18c806f89e918c0048c170c29f32fc2}

\r\n\r\n

Part of the hard work of preparing for Housing Day for first-years was, of course, manifesting their favorite House, River Running, and most importantly, coming up with a blocking group name. This year’s batch were nothing short of punny, topical, risque, intellectual, and remarkably self-aware. So, here’s Flyby’s breakdown of the twelve most hilarious and creative names from the Class of 2025!

\r\n\r\n

Larry Blockow

\r\n\r\n

An ode to our fearless leader. Anyone with this blocking name should just opt to live in Mass. Hall.

\r\n\r\n

Milf and Cookies

\r\n\r\n

A brilliant name that has me wondering: Who’s the milf? Who’s the cookies? Again, who’s the milf?

\r\n\r\n

Party Block Anthem

\r\n\r\n

Quite the banger… Party Block Anthem is a great blocking name and a reference to an even greater song. Let’s hope this foreshadows an LMFAO resurgence at Sig Chi.

\r\n\r\n

The Block of Gibraltar

\r\n\r\n

The pun: 10/10. The originality: 10/10. The knowledge of British geography: 10/10

\r\n\r\n

Wordle #930 6/6 BLOCK

\r\n\r\n

A little WORDy, but I appreciate the reference to America’s new favorite word game and ego booster.

\r\n\r\n

The Quadfather

\r\n\r\n

If you get quadded perhaps Michael Corleone can help you out.

\r\n\r\n

Six in the Stacks

\r\n\r\n

This is a great shout-out to one of the most famed Harvard traditions. It’s only ranked lower as it clearly calls out anyone who hasn’t yet completed the Harvard trifecta (aka me).

\r\n\r\n

Party of One

\r\n\r\n

You’re blocking alone, and you’re telling it how it is. Respect.

\r\n\r\n

Stop, Block, and Roll

\r\n\r\n

It’s catchy and rolls right off the tongue. It also reminds me of my elementary school fire drill days.

\r\n\r\n

The Suite Life

\r\n\r\n

This gives me so much nostalgia and serotonin. Zack and Cody would be proud.

\r\n\r\n

River Gang

\r\n\r\n

It’s straight forward. You want the River - I get it. I only wonder: what’s going to happen when if this group gets the Quad?

\r\n\r\n

Blockussy

\r\n\r\n

Um.

\r\n\r\n

If your blocking group name did not make the list, don’t worry, you’re just not that funny. JOKES! My blocking name is “The Toads,” so I have no legs to stand on. But whether your name is an inside joke or an expert pun, Flyby is wishing you the best of luck for Housing Day!

Lowell House

('

{shortcode-9026987f3d0f6cec6871a6d2c135d78c7817f09c}

\r\n\r\n

Quirks & Perks

\r\n\r\n

Lowell’s community is known for being incredibly tight-knit and sociable with plenty of unique traditions and events. Lowell Tea, complete with freshly baked goods and freshly brewed tea, is served every Thursday in the Resident Dean’s house, and during the spring semester, Lowell residents give speeches during dinner. In addition to the friendly residents and staff, there’s a multitude of cute pets and kids. Five dogs and a rabbit live in the House (pictured on Instagram @dogsoflowell), and time to time, you’ll also spot some of the adorable children of the House faculty wandering around.

\r\n\r\n

Lowell’s graduation doesn’t stop the community either: “There's so many really cool high level people in the Lowell network who just come and hang out and attend Lowell Tea. You'll see them around the House and not realize that they're insanely famous,” said HoCo co-chair Brammy Rajakumar ’23.

\r\n\r\n

{shortcode-054d25c12c53bc27dd8ea67f7bc1a2bf426e56c3}

\r\n\r\n

Partying Pagan-style is also popular in Lowell. The Yule Ball is a fancy winter formal to round out the fall semester, and the spring semester brings Mayday celebrations. You can also look forward to Glowell, a glow-in-the-dark rave, which, while not Pagan, is still very vibey, as well as Bacchanalia, a toga party where a Lowell resident dresses up as the Roman god of wine and gives a speech.

\r\n\r\n

Zhang summed up House spirit best: “We’re classy, but we’re extra about it. Yes, we do have a screening room, and yes, we do have high tea. Yes, we do celebrate Pagan rituals.”

\r\n\r\n

Staying Connected

\r\n\r\n

Even in the midst of the pandemic, the Lowell House community is as strong as ever. In addition to weekly entryway study breaks, Rajakumar gushed about the multitude of House events: “We had a wellness event involving pet plants and also real pets… We have watch parties for the Oscars and the Super Bowl. We've tried to keep the traditions going as much as possible.”

\r\n\r\n

{shortcode-1f706735802885ee97b60b2545fdf94974ff98a1}

\r\n\r\n

On top of all of Lowell’s endless social events, Zhang explained the house also offered Lowell students grants to grab meals and connect to each other during the pandemic, kind of like a Datamatch 2.0 (Lowellmatch?). “[People] would go to Jefes [or] Hong Kong…to just have a cool time and be able to connect to people,” he elaborated. If you’re looking for a House that actively fosters community (or is just willing to sponsor that 1 a.m. burrito craving), then Lowell might just be the place for you.

\r\n\r\n

As for what the class of 2025 has to look forward to, the HoCo Chairs are hopeful for in-person events and new merch. Rajakumar optimistically stated, “Hopefully we'll have all those cool tutor outings and trips to the Arboretum and the museums and Codzilla in person” extending the Lowell community even beyond the Harvard bubble.

\r\n\r\n

All About Housing

\r\n\r\n

Never fear: Lowell’s housing stands up to the rave reviews. Zhang notes that Lowell has a variety of “pretty decently large” accommodations. The types of rooms can vary from from two-floor duplex suites for larger blocking groups to hallway *singles*!

\r\n\r\n

As for other features, the iconic Lowell bell tower can’t be forgotten. Zhang, a bell ringer himself, added that there’s an open house every Sunday at 1 p.m. and that it’s tradition to do bell ringing at Halloween at midnight and after Harvard-Yale. Near the bell, there are also some cool study nooks where students can chill and do work.

\r\n\r\n

{shortcode-d7d370ff3097669988da36d53ac0ef543e82eb46}

\r\n\r\n

Residents also love Lowell's variety of basement spaces. “A lot of clubs do events here because our underground lounge is really cool. It's connected to the kitchen that opens up to look a little bit like a bar,” Rajakumar explained to us. So it’s safe to say that if you’re lucky enough to get Lowell, you won’t have to venture far.

\r\n\r\n

Finally, rumor has it (aka according to the HoCo chairs), there’s a secret laundry room in the basement in addition to the one everyone normally uses. So, if you can find it (and keep it to yourself), your laundry wait-times substantially decrease! ;)

\r\n\r\n

Your Questions, Answered

\r\n\r\n

Still curious about Lowell? We sat down with the House’s HoCo chairs to ask them the hard-hitting questions.

\r\n\r\n

What fruit would Lowell House be, and why?

\r\n\r\n

BR: I think passion fruit.

\r\n\r\n

JZZ: We're poppy and flair-y on the outside, but inside, we’re just as spicy and zesty.

\r\n\r\n

{shortcode-ebae5134bc1da74d83b8a449a3f22fea4b587f24}

\r\n\r\n

What side of Tiktok would Lowell House be on?

\r\n\r\n

JZZ: Oh, it would be definitely the musical TikTok. Literally it would have “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” nonstop… oh no, this is it. We would be on the Ratatouille Tiktok, when they made the whole Ratatouille musical from scratch.

\r\n\r\n

If you could describe Lowell with a HUDS dish, which dish would it be?

\r\n\r\n

BR: The tiramisu… Sweet, kind. Bougie. Always there for you when you need it most… Layered.

\r\n\r\n

Be honest. Are the bells annoying?

\r\n\r\n

JZZ: Sophomore year, I decided, “Do I want to ring on others or be rung at?” And I was like, I'd rather ring on others. But in all fairness, I've had people complain to me like, “Oh my God, you woke me up from my sleep!” And it's 1p.m. on a Sunday. What are you doing still asleep?

\r\n\r\n

BR: [The bells] are really cute. I think they're a cool tradition. And I think they make me feel bougie as an individual in this world today, so that's all that matters.

\r\n\r\n

{shortcode-6ab783b762474cfb7edf23231763cd68f03b8bde}

\r\n\r\n

What is the main thing you want first years who get Lowell to look forward to?

\r\n\r\n

JZZ: I mean for two years in a row, we were the undisputed best house. So there is everything to look forward to.

\r\n\r\n

BR: Great location. Literally amazing faculty deans and resident tutors. Gorgeous house. Perfect location. Lots of cute puppies.

Quincy House

('

{shortcode-8f29ff783f5063c92d689e0d61d9aa9b45d94219}

\r\n\r\n

Quirks & Perks

\r\n\r\n

Community is essential to the Quincy experience — they don’t call it “The People’s House” for no reason! With its large courtyard, welcoming dhall (oh, have we mentioned hot breakfast yet?) and creative events, Quincy makes it easy to get involved. “It’s really easy to invest in the community because there is such a strong community here,” says HoCo co-chair Odessa Deng ’22-’23. And the Quincy community extends beyond just its residents. HoCo co-chair Liam Hall ’23 says, “being so central on campus you get a lot of people from other houses who come here and this ends up being the central meeting place.”

\r\n\r\n

{shortcode-9afafb342618b5c2608f24ddea178598da11adb2}

\r\n\r\n

Regular events like festas (Quincy’s version of a stein) and weekly community dinners give residents something to look forward to after a long week of classes and commitments. Recent community dinners have involved group games and a timely Olympic theme.

\r\n\r\n

If that’s not enough to get excited about, Quincy’s annual traditions are widely beloved for bringing the whole house together. The House also offers annual traditions that bring everyone together! In the fall, the House holds a field day that pits academic classes head-to-head in pursuit of victory. In the spring, Quincy residents look forward to a House-wide game of assassins this Spring.

\r\n\r\n

Finally, an annual lip sync battle allows residents to show off their ~artistic~ side. After two years on Zoom, Deng and Hall are especially looking forward to the event’s in-person return.

\r\n\r\n

All About Housing

\r\n\r\n

The best thing about Quincy housing is that there truly is something for everyone. From hallways singles to duplex suites, the House has every living configuration imaginable, with even the option of living in apartment-style suites in DeWolfe for sophomores.

\r\n\r\n

Quincy housing is divided up between two buildings: New Quincy and Stone Hall. Some might say that this is a bit of a misnomer since Stone Hall is actually newly renovated, but either way, both buildings offer plenty of housing options. New Quincy is mostly suites with in suite bathrooms and many singles whereas Stone Hall is more varied with rooms ranging from hallway singles to larger suites.

\r\n\r\n

{shortcode-be8c749dee842be9ed1519c42692f36538ff2b80}

\r\n\r\n

If Quincy residents are looking to leave their rooms for a change of scenery or a fun activity, they don’t have far to go. Common spaces like the Qube — Quincy’s library — and the Dhall are great for studying and procrastinating spending time with friends. If studying doesn’t sound too appealing, there’s always the chance to try your hand at pottery in the ceramics studio.

Adams House

{shortcode-0bbf5106027fd6cf40ac0cce451f8fc3e97d869b}

\r\n\r\n

Quirks and Perks

\r\n\r\n

Adams never has a shortage of social events. From themed Carpe “seize the night” events every Thursday (karaoke, anyone?) to Valentine's Day Chocoholica (because what is Valentine’s Day without chocolate?), Drag Night, Winter Feast, and the Lunar New Year’s Celebration, Adams is filled with events that foster community and promote diversity.

If you’re looking for parties, head over to the Senior House (a three-story building housing a very lucky group of seniors) or to the giant suites in Westmorely (with organs??). It was hype enough for notable alums like FDR and Henry Kissinger, and it can only get more hype as renovation continues.

Adams’ new faculty deans and tutors have made it a commitment to build community among scattered housing, especially through the BGLTQ+ support and pre-career advising.

\r\n\r\n

In addition to the amazing advising staff, George the building manager and the beloved HUDS staff are integral to ensuring that Adams feels like home.

\r\n\r\n

All About Housing

\r\n\r\n

According to Adams resident Kayla M. Manning ’22, first-years who’ve been sorted into Adams should “get excited.” When you join Adams, you join a diverse family situated in the heart of Harvard Square. Although the official mascot is an acorn (that’s nuts), Adams is best recognized by its colors: red and gold. It is therefore not surprising that HoCo Co-Chair Joy Wang ‘22 placed Adams in Gryffindor, and Manning noted “it has Harry Potter vibes in the Gold Room and the dining hall.”

\r\n\r\n

{shortcode-ac09b653d6594ccb4488f0ce1ce5bd121cffa946}

\r\n\r\n

Adams’ aesthetic is certainly worth raving about. As the current upperclassman house under renovation, it is quickly shooting to the top of the list of most desirable places to live. The question is, when will the renovations be completed? The brand-new Adams will be fully completed by 2025 on a building-by-building basis. As a result, students will have a melting pot of rooms to live in from now until then, from the spacious Westmorely to the bougie Swing Housing Apartments to The Ritz Carlton Claverley.

\r\n\r\n

{shortcode-f2a8f914e8197f30fe1a1779e9d15626a6265300}

\r\n\r\n

And it doesn’t stop there. Adams also has some of the most unique common spaces on campus. Looking for an adventure? Take a jaunt through Adams’ case space, conservatory, colorful tunnels, FDR suite (auctioned for occupation during commencement), Bow and Arrow press, or Pool Theater (where *swimming* used to happen).

\r\n\r\n

All in all, Adams students have lots to get excited about with respect to housing. From the stunning architecture to the delicious renovations to the diverse, tight-knit community, Adams, in Wang’s opinion, can be described best in one word: home.

Your Questions, Answered

\r\n\r\n

Do you think you’ll ever be able to top the 2019 Housing Day video?

\r\n\r\n

JW: “Adams is a very talented house. There’s potential for it to be surpassed but I think it’s cemented its legacy.”

\r\n\r\n

Which HUDS dish does Adams do best?

\r\n\r\n

JW: “We have celebration cakes. We had a cake for the faculty games, we get thank-you cakes all the time. We always do a birthday cake for each month. Those cakes are pretty good.”

\r\n\r\n

Any cute pets in Adams house?

\r\n\r\n

JW: “We have [a] new corgi in the house, Lord Winsor. In terms of cats, I love Silas and Eliza. We also do general ‘paw-fice’ hours. The thing about the pets is that you actively see them and can actively interact with them. There’s tons of pets, and the tutors are very happy to have you come and relax, especially during midterms and finals.”

Adams is notorious for the Fall 2021 fruit fly invasion. How have you been trying to change this reputation?

\r\n\r\n

KMM: “Flies are gone.”

\r\n\r\n

JW: “We now have a tradition of having a ‘Flies Club’ party once a semester. Super fun, super lit. I have yet to see a single fruit fly this semester. I think it’s a fun joke we can call back on and obviously with Flies Club now, it’s become something that’s just a fun time.”

Kirkland House

\r\n\r\n

Quirks and Perks

\r\n\r\n

Kirkland, commonly dubbed “K-House,” has no shortage of traditions and festivities. If gift-giving is your love language, you’re in the right place! Along with the winter holiday dinner, a festivity in itself, one of the biggest events of the House is Secret Santa Week, during which Kirklanders sign up to participate in a House-wide gift exchange. If weekly events are more of your speed, you can enjoy Boat Club, originally started by members of the crew team and now run by resident tutor Kori Z. Bersin, which offers freshly-baked cookies every Monday night.

\r\n\r\n

One of the newer K-House traditions is the Choosening: every Sunday at midnight, chanting can be heard as the theme of the week is chosen out of an animal cracker jar. Once a theme is chosen, the theme forms the basis of the Kirkland community, and can be spotted throughout the House in the form of puns or references. Some of the themes for previous weeks have included blue week, record week, and Up week.

\r\n\r\n

“I've never really felt any strong ties to Harvard until this year when I came and lived in Kirkland,” HoCo co-chair Michelle Stegawski ’23 said. Overall, Kirkland’s biggest perk is its ‘kommunity.’ Because of how small the House is, you will cross paths with many other Kirklanders, but fret not! Waving at each other, asking about each other's days, and getting to know housemates becomes the daily norm and only serves to strengthen the Kirkland community.

\r\n\r\n

“I think some of the best people at Harvard live in Kirkland, you can sit down with anybody in the dining hall, and you'll learn something really cool, really interesting,” HoCo co-chair Aurora M. Avallone ’24 added.

\r\n\r\n

All About Housing

\r\n\r\n

As a sophomore in Kirkland, you will have a pretty good chance of being placed in DeWolfe housing, with AC and heating included— need I say more? If not in DeWolfe, sophomores are usually housed in doubles or triples, typically within a suite consisting of two rooms and a common room. This housing arrangement only adds to the close-knit spirit of Kirkland. Juniors can typically expect to share rooms, but you can look forward to your own single by senior year. And if you’re adventurous or befriend too many Kindlanders, you can opt to live in one of the two available 10-man suites known for regularly hosting parties.

\r\n\r\n

As a Kirklander, you will also have exclusive access to the historical Hicks House, which serves as the House library. Hicks House is the second oldest house in all of Cambridge, with a collection of books equally as historic.

\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\n

You won’t even need a scooter, as Kirkland’s architecture makes getting around easy. “Our basement is just one big snake, so people will go all the way from one end just to go do laundry or to fill up their water bottle and, without a doubt, [will] cross paths with people,” Stegawski said. “And so I would really say the architecture in the building design lends to our unique community.”

Your Questions, Answered

\r\n\r\n

Any lingering doubts about Kirkland? We caught up with its HoCo chairs for more info.

\r\n\r\n

If Kirkland was a caffeinated beverage, what beverage would it be?

\r\n\r\n

MS: An energy drink, just because once you get that Kirkland spirit, you’re just ready to go, and you won’t stop.

\r\n\r\n

AMA: We have a lot of energy and lovingness. An energy drink can make people ready to go and hang out with people.

\r\n\r\n

What HUDS dessert would Kirkland be?

\r\n\r\n

MS: The carnival cookies, they are just so colorful and every day is a carnival at Kirkland.

\r\n\r\n

AMA: Honestly, we have a petting zoo. We have all of it.

\r\n\r\n

{shortcode-5ae17a369fae25f4605f2270f0c12209c874605c}

\r\n\r\n

What is one thing you want freshmen to know about your House?

\r\n\r\n

AMA: Embrace the community. I think that's big, for whatever House you get, but especially for Kirkland. A lot of folks come here, and maybe they're not as extroverted, maybe they're not as wanting to get involved in a community. But Kirkland just sort of has that way of drawing you in, in a way that is so enchanting and inviting, that makes you want to join HoCo, that makes you want to hold the door for somebody, to strike up a conversation in the dining hall. I think that that's unparalleled to some of the bigger Houses. Like I can walk through the dining hall right now and probably know almost everybody's name, and I've only been here for not even two semesters.

\r\n\r\n

MS: You'll feel at home here, and you'll find your place.

Eliot House

('

{shortcode-501eaee3f411d31697d31cb1337931546df0003b}

\r\n\r\n

Quirks and Perks

\r\n\r\n

Eliot House has been described — by its own HoCo co-chairs Ebony M. Smith ’24 and Caroline Bukowski ’24 — as “classy, loving, and homey,” achieving these monikers by fostering a tight-knit community in several ways.

\r\n\r\n

Smith recounts that on her “first day moving in, [she] ran into someone who lived on the fifth floor and he just immediately helped [her] carry [her] things upstairs.” So, if you want to experience a fun meet-cute on your first day of school, Eliot could be the place for you! Meet-cutes aside, since each entryway consists of a wide range of students, there are many opportunities to meet new people from different years.

\r\n\r\n

Eliot’s supportive community shines in their avid intramural participation. The HoCo chairs note that Eliot excels in rowing and volleyball, but even when they do not come out on top, the entire House receives a funny and extensive email play-by-play of the game. Eliot residents are full of house spirit and pride, and many often turn out to watch intramurals as well.

\r\n\r\n

{shortcode-c6824fc6a0d1b253534655a1a69a3ce3033ae8b7}

\r\n\r\n

Like its reputation, its events are ornate and festive. Eliot’s most popular event is its spring formal, Fête. Bukowski enjoys Fête as it “gives me the type of vibes I love from the house — old-timey, but just so fun, exciting, and community-based.” During Fête, Eliot boasts a swing band in the courtyard, chocolate strawberries in the dessert room, and a DJ in the dhall (which is a great band name and someone should totally get on that). The house even hosts 1920s-style swing dance lessons in anticipation for the event. Fête’s famed exclusivity is just another opportunity for Eliot residents to make bank: some Eliot residents make a business out of selling plus ones for an unspecified high amount. So, if you want to attend a fun, old-timey event with a friend or attend a fun, old-timey event and make bank, Eliot is the place to be. When asked if other houses have fun spring formals, Bukowski stated, “They do. Ours is just the best.”

\r\n\r\n

Eliot also has smaller events like steins — Thursday night community events with a constant turnout of at least 50 to 100 people. During steins, attendees enjoy pizza, snacks, and drinks and participate in fun activities. They almost always get crashed by students in other houses because Eliot is just simply the place to be. Every month, Eliot also offers enhanced dinners, complete with smoked salmon, pumpkin ravioli, and blueberry sauce. “Basically… they pop off,” says Bukowski.

\r\n\r\n

{shortcode-acf8c41bc60090ca33bc72a19d1c751f2cd00b1a}

\r\n\r\n

Eliot tutors are accessible and fun and often hold exciting gatherings to help build the house community, including a piñata smashing session to release stress from those 20-page papers and grab-and-go dining. And, of course, Eliot has no shortage of furry friends. The house has four resident dogs — Izzy, Moose, Oggie, and Vera — that students can play with during Sunday Yappy Hours. The house also has a cat, Ringo, but he is unfortunately often “under the radar.”

\r\n\r\n

All About Housing

\r\n\r\n

Eliot rooms have large common spaces, tons of walk-in closets, and built-in wall lights (“material girl” to a tee). The dorms are beautiful, and the house is always open to accessibility requests.

\r\n\r\n

The only commonly known drawback is that Eliot is on the older side. However, Smith thinks “the argument is kinda weak because we have such beautiful architecture. I love the wood here. I think the fact that we are so old gives us the aesthetic that everybody likes… everything’s not yellow or white like in Winthrop or Lowell.” *shots fired* Although there can be lots of stairs, you’ll have incredible calves by the end of the year.

\r\n\r\n

{shortcode-916a8161abf0c643e9ca64416845f682e2a5ea7f}

\r\n\r\n

Eliot’s amenities include the Inferno (a social grille space), a photography room, a record room, a woodshop, and the Golden Arm movie theater. Don’t want to go outside? The tunnels connecting all the entryways make for a short and convenient trek to the dining hall. Beyond saving you from the cold, the tunnels have beautiful artwork: “Everytime I walk down there, I see something new. Yesterday, I realized Albert Einstein was on the wall. I was like, ‘I haven’t seen you this whole time!?’” remarked Smith.

\r\n\r\n

The HoCo chairs were also especially excited about “Espresso Dave.” For 20 years, “Espresso Dave” has come to Eliot before finals to provide students with a free Starbucks-eque menu. While the actual barista (and therefore the barista’s name) has changed, Eliot residents still call them “Espresso Dave” and that’s that.

\r\n\r\n

Your Questions, Answered

\r\n\r\n

What Hogwarts house would Eliot be sorted into?

\r\n\r\n

ES: Well, I think it’s between Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, and Gryffindor. I feel like it’s the creative part. Everybody’s either playing a piano and we have this amazing record room. Isn’t that Hufflepuff, like creativity?

\r\n\r\n

CB: Singers, dancers. People play piano in the library, and you feel like you’re transformed into the 1800s.

\r\n\r\n

ES: Well wait, let me look up Hufflepuff… Justice, loyalty, patience, and a propensity for hard work.

\r\n\r\n

CB: I think that’s us. We put in the work, but we also love everyone.

\r\n\r\n

{shortcode-2c8c6a4ee97f6f393ccb108df6de41de61790bc8}

\r\n\r\n

What side of TikTok would your house be on?

\r\n\r\n

ES: I feel like we would be the “material girl.” I think it fits so well.

\r\n\r\n

CB: Our last enhanced dinner, we had plates that had Eliot insignias on them. We had Eliot House napkins and glasses. We were waited on and everything.

\r\n\r\n

ES: We had a holiday dinner. We had wreaths and cute tablecloths. It was very pretty. I love this dining hall. I think I actually made a TikTok at the enhanced dinner to the “material girl” sound. Like I was sitting there all “material girl” with my apple cider.

\r\n\r\n

What can freshmen look forward to after they are sorted into Eliot House?

\r\n\r\n

CB: We have a ton of stuff planned for incoming freshmen. Once they get in, they’re part of the Eliot community. Immediately, they are added to our email list, they know what’s going on, they’re always invited, they’re invited to Fête. Once you get in, you’re part of a whole new community, and you get to be embraced by love.

\r\n\r\n

ES: If you’re a freshman and you get this house on Housing Day, just know that everybody wants you here, and you’re going to have a place here… People are just so nice and welcoming.

Quirks & Perks

\r\n\r\n

“You don’t transfer out of Winthrop,” HoCo co-chair Alli M. Tompkins ‘24 said.

\r\n\r\n

And after just one look around, it’s not hard to see why. Along with the picturesque exterior and the not one, not two, but three courtyards that attract tourists and students alike, Winthrop offers some of the best social scenes on campus. From the Arbella Ball to Throptober Fest — there’s an event at Throp for everyone. Throptober is Winthrop’s very own fall fair, with hay bales, pumpkins, and even a cotton candy-making machine. Not a fan of rolling around in the hay? The Arbella Ball provides a chance to dress up in your finest fits and pay tribute to the boat that brought over Winthrop’s namesake. Not only does Winthrop have extravagant events, but it also hosts weekly steins in the JCR and Lion’s Den to connect with fellow Thropians and grab some great food.

\r\n\r\n

{shortcode-ed2b6aa1bfca04f99236c0e5be24ee6126aef3d0}

\r\n\r\n

The House’s community also extends to an incredible team of resident tutors, building managers, deans, and proctors. Just this year, one of the Throp tutors hosted a chocolate tasting seminar where she taught a lesson about the history of chocolate and had students smelling (and tasting!) tens of different flavors.

\r\n\r\n

“It's really cool that the tutors here are so committed. They just want to do random things like have us all taste chocolate, so it was really cool,” Tompkins shared.

\r\n\r\n

Clearly, all you do is win win win(throp) with this house!

\r\n\r\n

All About Housing

\r\n\r\n

In Winthrop, more is more. With amenities from the JFK Suite to the Lion’s Den, there’s little that Winthrop doesn’t offer. As one of the most recently renovated houses, Winthrop sophomores often get hallway singles or suites with doubles with no carpeted floors or mice in sight (Winthrop does not settle for anything less)! Sophomores get the chance to live alongside juniors and seniors throughout Winthrop’s three stunning halls: Standish, Gore, and Beren. If you’re looking for a party, check out the Beren Rooftop Room, featuring a gorgeous view of the river.

\r\n\r\n

If you’re looking to study, head down to Winthrop's very own Widener-esque library, grab a snack from the student Grille, or meditate in Winthrop’s Meditation Room. With the Lorraine E. Chickering Music Rooms, Third Wrangler Art and Design Room, and their own gym, Winthrop dwellers have access to a variety of spaces right at their fingertips without ever having to leave.

While you’re counting down the days until you can (hopefully!) be sorted into Winthrop — you may still have some lingering questions about life as a Winthropian. Thankfully, Tompkins tells all in this final pitch for this amazing house.

\r\n\r\n

If you could describe your house with a HUDS dish, what would it be?

\r\n\r\n

AMT: The Sunday night chicken parm.

\r\n\r\n

What major would your house be?

\r\n\r\n

AMT: The first thing that comes to mind is Hist & Lit.

\r\n\r\n

{shortcode-98915280bfbb208df28b3a45eecef6e62be827df}

\r\n\r\n

What’s one thing you want a first-year to know about Winthrop?

\r\n\r\n

AMT: We have hardwood floors and no rodents or animals or bugs... So you are winning here.

\r\n\r\n

Why should first-years be excited about Winthrop?

\r\n\r\n

AMT: Winthrop is just the nicest building here. You will not find a physically nicer building. So there’s that, but there’s also a lot of people… Everyone comes here because the dining hall is nice, and there’s so many things. There’s a really beautiful library, the gym, wonderful rooms, wonderful buildings, so many events, and so many people.

If you’re fortunate enough to get this house, we look forward to seeing you rocking your lions sweatshirts all around campus #ThropLove <3.

All About Housing

\r\n\r\n

You can’t say Mather without talking about its singles. “I think ultimately the best part of Mather is you have single rooms. You still live in a suite on the low rise or you have your own single room,” HoCo chair Ailie S. Johnson ’24 said. Residents living in the tower have their own singles while low-rise residents live in suites that accommodate four to five people.

\r\n\r\n

{shortcode-0bb9d0c955598db91873f26dfa0305529efb41aa}

\r\n\r\n

“It's nice because you have your own room, but you're still living with all of your friends,” Johnson noted. That’s not all: for all the hotties with stomach problems, bathrooms are either ensuite or right next to your single for rooms in the tower.

\r\n\r\n

{shortcode-443fd46bba5330145310f8ea0c153ab9f2cc189e}

\r\n\r\n

Come for the singles, stay for the vibes. Mather’s dining hall is the social hub for its residents to enjoy the natural lighting while conversing with their friends. “Our dining hall feels very much like home,” Johnson said. “We have comfortable chairs and everyone sits with each other. So those two things mixed together creates a home-like atmosphere.” Mather also boasts a strong party presence through its large Junior Common Room, which comes with a ping pong table and many, many couches.

\r\n\r\n

Quirks and Perks

\r\n\r\n

No matter where your interests lie, Mather has you covered. Not only is Mather equipped with basic amenities like a gym, library, and junior common room, but it also has a bunch of other quirks and perks that you don’t want to miss! Mather has an extensive list of extra spaces that set it apart from the other houses. For one, prepare to get your hands dirty because Mather has its own pottery room in the basement. There are weekly classes where you can ease your mind from your stressful classes and have fun learning how to create your own clay masterpiece. But, if you’d rather reshape your mind than reshape a piece of clay, Mather also has a tranquility room where you can meditate and take yoga classes, equipped with more blankets, pillows, mats than you can count. Those who are more musically inclined will also find that Mather caters to their needs: it’s equipped with four music practice rooms where you can play your instrument to your heart’s content or sing your soul out.

\r\n\r\n

{shortcode-72efdfc099af0684c05a8d7af1e2deb07a1c4983}

\r\n\r\n

When you get tired of taking advantage of all the fun activities that Mather has to offer, have no fear because you’ll be able to feast on the amazing snacks and drinks that are offered at Mather’s Happy Hours (other houses call them steins) and brain breaks! But wait… there’s more! Every so often, Mather hosts Doggy Happy Hours where you get to enjoy the company of the house’s resident dogs — Yogi, Kira, Donkey, and Cori. And speaking of animals, Mather has not ONE but TWO cool mascots: gorillas and lions (Clearly, we weren’t lying when we said concrete jungles are where dreams are made of)!

\r\n\r\n

If fluffy, adorable, and loyal are not what you look for in friends, fear not because Mather holds many social events for humans throughout the year as well — Mather Lather, Mather Prom, and Fall Fest. Mather is known to be a very ~lively~ dorm so you can look forward to meeting new people even at gatherings in the courtyard. And in case you were wondering what Matherites jam out to at their many socials and parties, if you’re a Swiftie (or any person with refined taste), the Matherites we chatted with share their love for Taylor Swift.

\r\n\r\n

Your Questions, Answered

\r\n\r\n

We sat down with Mather’s HoCo chair for all the insider details about Harvard’s ~quirkiest~ house:

\r\n\r\n

What is your favorite memory in Mather?

\r\n\r\n

ASJ: I think one of my favorite memories was during Fall Fest and we brought out our Fire pit and everyone was making S’mores and everyone was just happy and there was Taylor Swift playing in the background. And it was just good vibes.

\r\n\r\n

Any words you want to say about Mather to the future freshmen?

\r\n\r\n

ASJ: Well, I would say that even though the architecture isn't the prettiest, it has the best community and you don't have to live in a double room ever again. I feel like that alone is really nice. You have your own space, but you also have a community to go to. So you can kind of have both.

\r\n\r\n

{shortcode-3403b5aa2406663b8fa43a95f294ec6b53f44597}

\r\n\r\n

If you had to describe Mather as one HUDS dish, what dish would you describe Mather as?

\r\n\r\n

ASJ: I would describe it personally as the—this is going to be so weird—but the jalapeno mac and cheese, because it's just the best. It's seasoned, it’s great, and Mather’s just great. And so I would compare Mather to that because I love both of them with all my heart.

\r\n\r\n

Do you have a favorite thing that they do for brain breaks here?

\r\n\r\n

ASJ: My favorite thing is going down to the d-hall at like 9 or 10 p.m. to get a bagel and chocolate milk. It just hits the spot really late—it's just chocolate milk in general, you know?

\r\n\r\n

What Taylor Swift song do you think Mather matches best?

\r\n\r\n

ASJ: You could always go for “You Belong with Me.”

\r\n\r\n

What Hogwarts house do you think Mather is?

\r\n\r\n

ASJ: I think Mather’s Hufflepuff, but not in a bad way, like in a good way. [...] It's not like the stereotypical Harvard house with the same infrastructure design, but it has its quirks. It's made of concrete, you know. But once you get to know it, it's really nice to be here. And I have zero complaints about being here, and I actually prefer it over a lot of other houses and how they feel when you walk inside of them.

\r\n\r\n

Any other things that you would want to mention about the house?

\r\n\r\n

ASJ: People here are very fun. Everyone loves Mather! It's a super nice place to be and the people, as I've said, are just really nice. Everyone, like tutors and faculty deans, are always there for you! It makes living here feel like a home instead of as if you're living away from home.

Dunster House

\r\n\r\n

Quirks and Perks

\r\n\r\n

Apart from its beautiful exteriors that are featured extensively in Harvard postcards, Dunster House shines on the inside, too — through its community and community-wide events. This past year, Dunster has held some unique steins, including both an ice cream and fries tasting event. For Halloween, the House pulled a few tricks out of its sleeves to bring the community together by designating certain rooms as “Trick-or-Treat” destinations.

\r\n\r\n

{shortcode-71662346c08cf0d5589437ae8589c47e38bc33ef}

\r\n\r\n

Some other classic Dunster events are the Goat Roast, a spring-barbeque and field-day-like event. Dylan Zhou ’23 said the Goat Roast tradition once used to feature an actual goat that was roasted in the courtyard, but fortunately, that tradition has become a bit more wholesome. Zhou said it now features an outdoor barbeque with a stuffed animal goat and “roasts–as in jokes,” delivered by the Resident Dean. Perhaps Dunster’s most quirky feature is its hand-washing station located in the dining hall itself, where residents can wash their hands. It’s decked out with scented soap and stickers that one can put on afterward to signal that their hands are squeaky clean.

\r\n\r\n

{shortcode-73d5631ae90c9c4d5ce461f260b1a639a55802df}

\r\n\r\n

From its traditional aesthetics to its tight-knit community and all the sinks in between, these elements work together to make Dunster a sought-after house every year. To the freshman hoping to win the lottery and get placed in Dunster, HoCo co-chair Leslie Arroyo ’23 said, “I want to emphasize the community. Yes, Dunster is an amazing and beautiful house, and the fact that it's been renovated and its rooms make it special — I personally really love my single. But I think what really makes Dunster amazing is the people. I have just been able to make so many friends outside of my blocking group and feel truly included within the house! I've just felt very close to everyone in the house, including our house administrators and our Resident Dean, and it's been amazing living here.”

\r\n\r\n

All About Housing

\r\n\r\n

Sophomore housing features either a hallway double or a quad with two doubles. These quads are either within Dunster itself or a short walk away in DeWolfe. (Even if you end up outside the main Dunster courtyard in DeWolfe, fear not, because you’ll end up with a quad that has a kitchen and AC!)

\r\n\r\n

{shortcode-d690ddc8b52fe8fb4ca78e22d73b6c2bedd80174}

\r\n\r\n

And the housing just keeps getting better. As a junior or senior, you’ll likely live in a hallway single or a suite with all sorts of room combinations - you can pick the perfect layout for your friend group! HoCo Co-Chair Miyu Imai ’23 said she loves the architecture of the spaces that Dunster offers. “Since I spent a year and a half away from campus, this is my first time living in Dunster. The moment I stepped in here last fall I really loved it.”

\r\n\r\n

Your Questions, Answered

\r\n\r\n

What is your favorite place in the house?

\r\n\r\n

LA: I really enjoy [having] the library. There are times when I might have a big assignment coming up, or something I really need to concentrate on, and I enjoy being in the library and being able to study there for a few hours. But besides that, I think the basement is one of my to-go places. A lot of times I find myself coming down here just to study with friends and sometimes even play ping-pong or foosball.

\r\n\r\n

MI: I love the dining hall! It is the best dining hall ever. It's beautiful. It's spacious. It has really high ceilings and is really pretty, but also it's a place where the community comes together. It's also a place where I can study. I love how there are a lot of people coming in and it's a place where you see friends, but you can also focus and study. And you can also grab food if you're hungry. For me, the dining hall is my go-to place.

\r\n\r\n

{shortcode-4581ed61ad14c20e3c448e1d8d979d5bba7129e7}

\r\n\r\n

What do you think is the biggest misconception about the house?

\r\n\r\n

LA: I feel like I've heard a lot of people say that it's just as far as the quad houses. I will admit it is a little far, but I think I love that we are still part of the river and that we're still close to Harvard Square. So if I want to stop by a restaurant or CVS we're still somewhat close. I think the walk is enjoyable in the sense that you are still connected to the rest of the houses here. You're still able to walk through Harvard Square, so I personally don't think it's too far. I enjoy every walk that I take.

\r\n\r\n

MI: Just walking by the river is an amazing walk on its own. I’ve never found the walk to something like Smith to be too much just because it's so beautiful around here.

\r\n\r\n

If Dunster was a HUDS dish, which one would it be?

\r\n\r\n

MI: Clam Chowder. I love clam chowder. I think it's like the building itself—it has that slightly traditional aspect, but once you're inside, it's beautiful. Sorry, I am a huge fan of clam chowder!

Pforzheimer House

('

{shortcode-8c20ef7654ed9c199b4c765a8b0e353e5b9ea4df}

\r\n\r\n

Quirks and Perks

\r\n\r\n

If there’s any house that knows how to build a strong and tight-knit community, it’s Pforzheimer House (lovingly called Pfoho, for short)! House pride is huge in Pfoho — from the residents’ overuse of ‘pf’ puns wherever possible (it's their secret to building pfamily), to the serious application process just to wear one of ten polar bear suits while swarming the yard on Housing Day. Given how warm and uncomfortable it is inside a polar bear suit, the commitment is respectable, and is a metaphor for the warmth of the Pfoho community.

\r\n\r\n

There are also countless amenities and events for residents to look forward to, such as the relaxation Spfa and workout Pfojo, to weekend trips for dog sledding and snow tubing. For those of us looking to pass the time, Pfoho’s Arcade and Pfart Studio provide a space to mindlessly play games or paint a masterpiece. And for the days where you just need a little bit of quiet, you can hide away in Pfoho’s mini oasis, the faculty row courtyard. Even on a normal day, Pfoho’s common spaces are always full of students— there's never a silent moment in the JCR or the famous double decker Dhall. It's common for students to simply sit there and talk for hours.

\r\n\r\n

{shortcode-b019c32816f9717b846b0357120b7f738dbf6304}

\r\n\r\n

Some of the best memories residents have made are through Pfoho centered events. Both HoCo co-chairs, KayLeigh B. Noblin’23 and Rebecca M. Hayes ’23, say one of their favorite memories is Camp Pfoho, a retreat where incoming sophomores have the opportunity to meet people in the house and go swimming and canoeing. Furthermore, Noblin and Hayes agree that Pfaculty Deans Anne Harrington and John Durant go above and beyond to plan Pfoho-specific events. Some of their most iconic events include Pfoho High Tea where residents come together for fancy tea and pastries, and the Hygge — a fireside event with warm apple cider donuts. Pfoho even has doggy office hours with Piper, the Pfaculty dean’s loveable dog, and Bluely, who is “a super cute australian shepherd” and Hayes’s favorite puppy.

\r\n\r\n

All About Housing

\r\n\r\n

The best thing about Quad housing is you’ll have more room for yourself than you can possibly imagine. Noblin can confirm that Pfoho’s housing is pretty ideal — sophomores are very very likely to get n + 1 housing, which is a rare commodity in other houses. Essentially, you are likely to be living in a suite with one more room than the number of residents present!

\r\n\r\n

{shortcode-97038a31739492a1938c9a3935da995648aafe00}

\r\n\r\n

In Pfoho your personal space is highly valued. The house is made up of 5 main buildings — from Comstock, Holmes, Moors, Wolbach, and the Jordans, an apartment complex. With housing in the form of hallway style singles to apartment style duplexes, there is a range of rooms available depending on how many people you want to live with. You can even opt for suites that include a (gAsP) personal kitchen!

\r\n\r\n

{shortcode-cb6bdca7887a9d232767563cfd79a06e9e32da1c}

\r\n\r\n

If the n+1 housing isn’t enough, the most infamous room in Pfoho is the Belltower Suite, which has four singles, a common room, and an attached kitchen. The Belltower is so high in demand that it has its own lottery, but if you’re lucky enough to snag this suite as a senior, you’ll have a coveted party space like no other.

\r\n\r\n

The housing is just a small part of what makes Pfoho so special, and if you do end up in this beautiful house right in the center of the Quad lawn, we know you’ll be a proud polar bear!
