University Swordsmen Down N. Y. U. 9 to 8 as 1934 Loses
The Harvard University fencing team opened its season with a close 9 to 8 victory over New York University at the Indoor Athletic Building last Saturday afternoon.
The Crimson men were the superior with the folls, winning this portion of the match by a 7 to 2 score. New York University retaliated with the epee by shutting out the Harvard men, 4 to 0. The sabre event was divided by the two teams, each countering 2 points.
H. B. Wesselman '31 and R. B. Lawson '32 were the Crimson stars, winning every bout in which they were entered. Picket shone for New York University, winning the Violet's only folls bouts.
In two previous contests on their week-end trip, the New York University team defeated Boston University 9 to 4, and M.I.T. 11 to 6.
The Freshman fencing team suffered a 13 to 4 defeat at the hands of the Brunswick High School swordsmen. Hurd was the outstanding man for the Freshman squad with victories in the foils and epee bouts. Brunswick won the foils event, 6 to 3.
Brunswick also came out first in epee matches by a 3 to 1 score, and made a clean sweep with the sabre, 4 to 0.
