Base Ball.

Harvard 12; Amherst 7.

The Harvard nine won a game Saturday from the Amherst team on Blake Field, Amherst. The game, which was an interesting, and at some points an exciting one, was witnessed by many enthusiastic Amherst supporters, together with a large contingent from Smith College.

Amherst outbatted Harvard, but her men made errors at critical points and ran bases poorly; in other respects their playing was just about equal to Harvard's. Harvard's batting was very weak, but the men waited with good judgement and got a great many bases on balls. In the field Howland and Linn made good catches, and Upton threw well to bases. The whole team played a clean fielding game. Cummings started in to pitch for Harvard, but he was not well, and gave way after the third inning to Downer. Both he and Cummings were a trifle wild.

Hare, of Amherst, gave seven bases on balls in the first two innings, and materially aided Harvard to win the game. In the latter half the game he was much steadier, and pitched well.

Amherst was first at the bat. Burns struck out; Gould flied out to Linn; Hunt, after making a hit, was thrown out at second. Dean got his base on balls and stole second; he was caught between second and third. Linn and Howland got bases on balls; they were advanced each a base on Mason's grounder. which the third baseman fumbled, and came in on Lacey's wild throw. Mason took second on the attempt to put Howland out at the plate, took third on a passed ball, and scored on Trafford's single. Upton sacrificed, Alward got his base on balls, but Cummings made the third out on a fly to right field. In the second inning Sullivan started out with a two bagger, but was neatly caught between second and third by Alward, Cummings and Soule assisting. Lacey took first on the out and second on Taylor's single; both were advanced a base by Cutler's being hit by a pitched ball, and Lacey was forced in by Brooks, who was given a base on balls. Hare flied out to Howland, who threw to the plate, catching Taylor. Soule got a base on balls and made the round of the bases on Hare's wild throw to first base. Taylor assisted Dean out. Linn got his base on balls, stole second, went to third on Howland's single, and came in on a wild pitch. Howland stole second, got third on a wild pitch, and came in on Hunt's wild throw to third base. Mason got his base on balls, but was caught napping at first. Trafford flied out to second.

In the third Burns hit safely to right. Linn threw low to first base and Burns took second, but was thrown out at third by Upton. Gould flied out to Howland. Hunt made a two-bagger and came in on Sullivan's single. Cummings assisted Lacey out. For the next two innings neither side scored.

In Harvard's half of the fifth Mason hit safely. Traffod's and Upton's sacrifices advanced him two bases, and he came home on Alward's single. Down was the third out on an easy grounder to Burns. In the sixth inning, after two men were out and a chance given to put out the third, Taylor and Cutler made singles and Brooks brought them in with a three base hit to right centre. Dean assisted to make the third out. In the seventh inning Amherst brought her score dangerously near to Harvard's. Burns got a base on balls. Gould was hit by a pitched ball and Burns took second; Upton had a passed ball and Downer two wild pitches, on which both men scored. Harvard failed to score in the sixth and seventh inngs. In the eighth inning Harvard scored four times. Downer was out on a grounder to the infield. Burns threw wild to first on Soule's grounder, and the latter got to third. Dean stole second and came in on Linn's timely three bagger to right. Howland flied to centre and Linn tallied on the out. Mason knocked a high fly to centre, which Gould muffed. Mason stole second and came in on a wild pitch. Trafford was the last out, Taylor to Lacey.

Amherst scored her last run in the ninth. Alward fumbled Hunt's grounder. Hunt was forced to second on Sullivan's base on balls, and came in on Cutler's single. Three men were on bases, but Lacey struck out, Linn made a fine running catch in right, and Trafford made the last out unassisted.
