Non-Ivy Sweep Evens Harvard's Record

These runs gave the Crimson a lead that it would not surrender.

Freshman pitcher Shelly Madick pitched the first four innings of the game, allowing only one hit and recording three strikeouts.

“Shelly really gave us a base to work with in terms of offense,” Winkeller said. “We came out strong in the first inning and that really set the tone for the entire game.”

In the bottom of the third, Harvard scored its only other run of the game. Bettinelli started the rally with a single and moved to second base with Sabin’s sacrifice bunt. She then came around to score when Winkeller hit a double down the left-field line.

Although the Crimson bats quieted down after the third inning, its defense made up for it, holding Holy Cross to only one run.

Harvard brought in junior Michele McAteer to relieve Madick in the fifth inning. She only allowed one run—the result of two Crimson errors—the rest of the way.

“She held them,” Winkeller said, “and that’s just what we needed.”

Allard planned on using the four pitchers during the doubleheader as a way to prepare for this weekend, when Harvard will host Ivy foes Columbia and Cornell.
