Search Committee Is Meeting
The search committee for the assistant dean for public service post met Friday for the first time and will begin advertising on Thursday, chair of the search committee Daniel Steiner '54 said yesterday.
In the committee's "efficient" 59-minute meeting, its members decided to advertise the position nationally in such publications as The Boston Globe the Chronicle of Higher Education and the Nonprofit Times, said Steiner, who is the former vice president and general counsel of the University.
The opening will be announced in Thursday's Harvard Gazette.
Requirements for the job include a bachelor's degree, and a master's degree in public service or a related field is preferred, according to the job description. Being familiar with the Harvard, Boston and Cambridge communities would also be useful, it says.
The dean will be "responsible for the management and allocation of College and University resources and personnel associated with the public service and volunteer programs of Harvard College."
As stated in the announcement, applicants should respond as soon as possible and no later than May 19, Steiner said.
A draft of the posting has been sent to Director of Phillips Brooks House Greg A. Johnson and Director of Public Service Programs for Harvard College Gail L. Epstein, Steiner said.
The post was created out of a recommendation in last September's Report on the Structure of Harvard College, co-authored by Nancy L. Maull and Harry R. Lewis '68.
Dean of the College L. Fred Jewett '57 has said that no matter when the final decision is made, he and deandesignate Lewis will confer on the choice of the assistant dean. Sarah J. Schaffer MATHER HOUSE
Mather House Superintendent Ill
Mather House superintendent James R. Garside has been ill for more than a month and is unable to fulfill the responsibilities of his job, according to Mather House Co-Master Lee G. Haffrey '73.
Haffrey said in a telephone interview yesterday that Garside has been ill and out of work, but refused to give any details of Garside's ailment.
"He's been monitoring his health very closely for some time," Haffrey said, but added that he is "not at liberty" to divulge the nature of Garside's illness.
Haffrey did comment that Garside had spent some time in the hospital, but that he is currently at home.
