Columbia 16, Princeton 13

NEW YORK--Columbia football fans tore down the goalposts, smeared themselves with mud and exulted in cold, damp weather Saturday after the Lions ended a five-year drought with a 16-13 victory over Princeton.

Fans endured rain and 43-degree temperatures to watch Columbia break a 44-game losing streak, the longest in major college history.

Sophomore tailback Solomon Johnson's 2-yard scoring run with 5:13 to play was the difference, but the game was far from over. In fact, it looked like loss No. 45 when Princeton apparently scored on Judd Garrett's 22-yard run. But the touchdown was nullified by a penalty.

A Princeton 48-yard field goal on the game's final play was short.

Columbia's other sophomore running back, Greg Abbruzzese ran for 182 yards on 39 carries.

Princeton looked like if it would blow the game away early on. The Tiger took a 10-0 lead over the Lions.

But Columbia retaliated with a Matt Pollard 33-yard field goal, and a 9-yd. pass from Bruce Mayhew to tight end Matt Less.

The extra point failed, and the Lions trailed after three, 10-9. Princeton went up after three, but Johnson's 2-yd. run put the Lions up for good and ended Division's I-AA's longest losing streak.

Columbia looks to continue its new streak when it visits Yale next weekend. Before last weekend, the Elis were the last team the Lions had defeated. Columbia defeated Yale on October, 15, 1983, five years to the day of next weekend's contest.

Army 33, Yale 18

NEW HAVEN, Conn.--Army running back Mike Mayweather ran for 155 yards and a touchdown as the Cadets (4-1) rolled up 425 rushing yards in a 33-18 victory over Yale Saturday.

Yale (0-3-1 overall, 0-1-1 Ivy) has now lost three non-league games in a row by combined scores of 115-25. The Elis fell to the University of Connecticut, 41-0, three weeks ago and 41-7 to Navy the following week.

Army led, 10-3, at halftime, then scored 17 unanswered points. Mayweather scored on a 5-yard run, then Bryan McWilliams passed 32 yards to Sean Jordan for another score. That was the only pass Army completed all day out of three attempts.

Following Keith Walker's second field goal of the game, a 28-yarder that gave Army a 27-3 led, Yale came alive with two quick scores in the fourth quarter. Buddy Zachery went 82 yards for the third-longest scoring run in Yale history and quarterback Mark Brubaker threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Tom Szuba.
