Incumbent Republican Jake Garn, a veteran of a Space Shuttle flight, won easily over Democrat Craig Oliver.

VERMONT

Two-term incumbent Sen. Patrick Leahy won re-election. In a three-way gubernatorial race, incumbent Democrat Madeleine Kunin beat Republican Lt. Gov. Mark Price and Burlington's Socialist mayor, Bernie Sanders, but did not earn the majority needed to keep the race from the state legislature.

Former Secretary of the Transportation Brock Adams beat incumbent Republican Senator Slade Gorton, who lost support this summer after he traded his vote to support the nomination of Federal Judge Daniel Mannion.

WISCONSIN

Republican incumbent Bob Kasten held off a late challenge from the Democratic nominee, Ed Garvey. In the governor's race, Republican Tommy Thompson defeated Democrat Tony Earle.
