HAWAII

Democrat Daniel Inouye won re-election easily. In a hot governor's race. Democrat John Waihee faced Republican Andy Anderson.

IDAHO

Incumbent Republican Senator Steven D. Symms survived a fierce challenge from Gov. John V. Evans. The governor's race between Democrat Cecil D. Andrus and David H. Leroy was too close to call.

ILLINOIS

Democrat Senator Alan Dixon was re-elected. In a governor's race that saw followers of Lyndon LaRouche earn a place on the Democratic ticket, incumbent Republican James Thompson beat off a challenge from Democrat-turned-Independent Adlai Stevenson III '52.

INDIANA

Incumbent Republican Dan Quayle, who swept to victory over Birch Bayh in 1980 on Reagan's coattails, won re-election easily over Jill Long.

IOWA

Republican incumbent Senator Charles Grassley won in an easy race. In a much tighter contest for governor, incumbent Terry Branstad edged Democrat Lovell Junkins.

KANSAS

Majority leader, soon-to-be Minority Leader Robert Dole coasted to victory over Democratic opponent Guy MacDonald. In the governor's race, Republican Mike Hayden defeated Democrat Thomas R. Docking.
