LOS ANGELES--A prosecutor said yesterday charges of rape, sexual battery and assault would be filed against pro football Hall of Fame member Jim Brown after Brown failed to produce two witnesses he said would clear him.

Brown will be formally charged with one count each within 24 hours, said Deputy District Attorney Sandra Buttitta.

Brown, who played mine years in the National Football League with the Cleveland Browns, said he welcomed the announcement and was eager to bring the case to court.

"For the first time in my life I'll get full disclosure," he said in a telephone interview. "They've conspired with a known har to discredit me, and they have facts -- the facts that prove the lady wasn't raped."

If convicted. Brown faces a maximum sentence of 13 years, Buttitta said.
