Painting a fence is an OK metaphor for the radio--it's a process of continuous flow with a clearcut direction (progress). But more importantly, it's the kids like this, confused by occult media such as the radio, who are driven to do simple, understandable things like paint fences.
Andy Klein's Pix: 68's Top 50 Singles
The following is a list of the top 50 singles of the past year of rock as compiled by Andy Klein, who is an authority on rock music; the order of the records is determined, as he explains, by worth. . . .
The list, unlike those distributed by the radio stations, has nothing to do with the relative popularity of this year's hits, but rather is based entirely upon the value in my head. Accordingly, Top Forty fans (of which I am one) will note the absence of several of the biggest hits of this year, as "Honey," "Judy in Disguise," and "Love is Blue," and the presence of songs as "Cold Feet" and "Stingy Jenny," which none of you have heard of. Too bad.
Unfortunately, the time span covered by this list has also been defined out of my memory and may not exactly coincide with the year 1968. It begins roughly between "Chain of Fools" and "I Second That Emotion" and ends between "Everyday People" and "Can I Change My Mind." 1. Hey Jude / Revolution THE BEATLES (Apple) (The record that finally separated the Beatles people from the non-Beatles people. According to the good authority of George Harrison, this version of "Revolution" was recorded after the one on the album. "Hey Jude": the jolly lads give a bit of advice to all of us--but you don't know what it really means till the lady with the madonna smile sings it to you and, touching you lightly on the forehead, makes it better. I love all five of you.) 2. Dock of the Bay OTIS REDDING (Volt) (Only the greatest song of the greatest singer.) 3. Jumpin' Jack Flash THE ROLLING STONES (London) (It's a gas.) 4. I Say a Little Prayer ARETHA FRANKLIN (Atlantic) (Aretha takes a bad song and makes it better, cuts down Dionne totally. This was the B side of the single; all of Aretha's B sides were better than her A sides this year.) 5. No Expectations THE ROLLING STONES (London) 6. Lady Madonna THE BEATLES (Capitol) (A great rock song, though maybe Fats Domino's version is a little better--but that's a different lady and a different madonna.) 7. The Weight / I Shall Be Released THE BAND (Capitol) 8. I Second That Emotion THE MIRACLES (Tamla) (Smokey -- 'nuff said.) 9. I Can't Quit Her BLOOD, SWEAT AND TEARS (Columbia) 10. I Heard It Through the Grapevine MARVIN GAYE (Tamla) 11. Sour Milk Sea JACKIE LOMAX (Apple) (Written and produced by George Harrison with Eric Clapton on lead and Nicky Hopkins on piano, this is just as good as it ought to be.) 12. Dance to the Music SLY AND THE FAMILY STONE (Epic) 13. Soul Man SAM AND DAVE (Stax) 14. Feelin' Alright TRAFFIC (United Artists) 15. Mr. Bojangles JERRY JEFF WALKER (Atco) 16. I Wish It Would Rain / I Truly Truly Believe THE TEMPTATIONS (Gordy) 17. Too Much of Nothing PETER PAUL AND MARY (Warner Brothers) (A Dylan Song.) 18. Yesterlove THE MIRACLES (Tamla) 19. Do It Again THE BEACH BOYS (Capitol) 20. All Along the Watchtower JIMI HENDRIX (Reprise) (A classic Tommy's Lunch song.) 21. Everyday People / Sing a Simple Song SLY AND THE FAMILY STONE (Epic) 22. Both Sides Now JUDY COLLINS (Elektra) 23. We're a Winner THE IMPRESSIONS (ABC) 24. Ain't No Way ARETHA FRANKLIN (Atlantic) 25. Cold Feet ALBERT KIND (Stax) (Best Straight blues of the year.) 26. Ain't Nothin' Like the Real Thing MARVIN GAYE AND TAMMI TERRELL (Tamla) 27. Cloud Nine THE TEMPTATIONS (Gordy) 28. Guitar Man ELVIS PRESLEY (RCA Victor) 29. If You Can Want THE MIRACLES (Tamla) 30. Slip Away CLARENCE CARTER (Atlantic) 31. Stoned Soul Picnic / Sweet Blindness LAURA NYRO (Columbia) (Her versions, though flops, are much better than the Fifth Dimensions'.) 33. Sunshine of Your Love CREAM (Atco) 34. Pride of Man THE QUICKSILVER MESSENGER SERVICE (Warner Brothers) 35. You Send Me ARETHA FRANKLIN (Atlantic) 36. Happy Song / Open the Door OTIS REDDING (Volt) 37. Wichita Lineman GLEN CAMPBELL (Capitol) (A piece of trash, but the finest late night driving song.) 38. Baby Now That I've Found You THE FOUNDATIONS (Uni) 39. Those Were the Days MARY HOPKIN (Apple) 40. People Gotta Be Free THE RASCALS (Atlantic) 41. Take Me for a Little While THE VANILLA FUDGE (Atco) (A mediocre version of a great song originally by the Lovables.) 42. Piece of My Heart BIG BROTHER AND THE HOLDING COMPANY (Columbia) (All right, but it dosen't touch Erma's version.) 43. Magic Bus WHO (Decca) 44. Lover's Holiday PEGGY SCOTT AND JOJO BENSON (SSS) 45. Stingy Jenny / Baby Don't You Tear My Clothes LITTLE RICHARD (Brunswick) 46. Stormy THE CLASSICS (Imperial) (Ignore everything but the sax.) 47.
