Harvard's center was proving far stronger than the other parts of the rushline, and McCormick and Heffelfinger couldn't make a yard through it. Bliss punted, and Corbett made a fair catch in the middle of the field.
Yale's Sharp Work.Lake, no gain behind the V. Corbett, four yards lost. Three downs, and a punt out of bounds by Trafford. McCormick brought it in again on Yale's 20-yard line. The ball was well down into Yale's territory. It was three downs and Bliss punted short, hardly to the centre of the field. Corbett muffed the punt, and Trafford who was backing him up also fumbled it. Hinkey gave a dive and the ball was Yale's at the centre of the field. Rushes carried it straight up the field towards Harvard's goal. The ball was Yale's on the crimson 10-yard line, but Umpire Coffin detected Sanford holding.
Trafford's punt to relieve the goal was poor, and Yale had the ball again on Harvard's 15-yard line. But Harvard broke through and made Yale surrender the ball on four downs.
Trafford kicked on the first down. Bliss blocked off Hallowell and McCormick caught the punt and gained 15 yards along the side line. On the down he ran into Mackie's arms. Then Heffelfinger made a beautiful hole and Bliss invaded Harvard's territory 12 yards further. He fumbled a moment later and Lake dropped on the ball.
Corbett no gain. Trafford no gain. Three downs and then a punt by Trafford. The ball came back to Harvard on her 35 yard line. This time the backs gained their distance, and Hallowell wriggled through for six yards more. Corbett and Trafford got five yards, but Harvard was holding in the rush line and Yale broke the offensive. Back to the crimson 30 yard line Yale rushed the ball. Harvard showed her strength in the centre and got it in four downs.
Harvard's Costly Fumble.Then Gage worked the wedge on every down and Lake and Trafford got the game back to the centre of the field. Yale got the ball on four downs, but soon was forced to kick. Corbett took the ball on the 35 yard line. Two downs without gain and Corbett was signalled to try the right end. Not a man was there to interfere for him and Hinkey tackled him hard. Corbett dropped the ball and Bliss picked it up, aided by pretty interference got through the few Harvard players who were near and scored. McClung easily kicked the goal. Score, 10 to 0.
Harvard's Plucky Fight.Straight up the field without once losing the ball, Harvard rushed it to Yale's 15-yard line. They used the wedge and the "whirligig" constantly, and gained every time through Yale's center. At the 15-yard line Yale made a stand and Harvard's V could get no further. Then Trafford fell back for a try at goal from the field. The ball went low and struck Heffelfinger, who had broken through. It bounded off to the right and the Yale guard and Hallowell both made a dive for it. Hallowell got it and Harvard had the play again on Yale's 18-yard line. Again the Yale rushers stood firm and tackled low, and Harvard could make no gain. Then Trafford fell back again for a try at goal. The ball went spinning off to the left, and Harvard's last chance for scoring was gone.
The ball was brought out to the Yale 25-yard line. McCormick made a good gain behind the V and Heffelfinger got through the center. McClung, Morison and the Yale backs all gained through Harvard's forwards and rushed the play up to Harvard's 25-yard line. Bliss started to run, but Waters broke through and downed him. It was the last play of the game.
