Winter and Hinkey made a hole between Newell and Hallowell, and McClung slipped through for another substantial gain. Morrison, Heffelfinger, Winter, McCormick and McClung in turn did the ground gaining and got through Harvard's line at almost every rush.
Umpire Coffin gave the blue five yards for Harvard's offside play and Yale had the ball within 25 yards of her opponent's goal. Then Harvard played better and Yale had to surrender the ball on four downs.
Trafford kept up the punting game, but the Yale backs never fumbled. Bliss made a dash around the right end and Morrison gained through the tackles. Yale made three downs, but a Harvard rusher was offside and Umpire Coffin paced off five more yards into Harvard's territory. A moment later Bliss dropped the ball and Waters fell on it.
Harvard had a chance to show what her rushing was worth. There was little interference by the forwards and Corbett and Lake went for the line in vain. Trafford kicked, McClung caught it in the middle of the field and Yale invaded Harvard's territory again. They got it up to the 30 yards line, but there Wallis held Waters and the umpire awarded the ball to Harvard.
Harvard on the Offensive.Corbett rushed six yards around the left end and the two Yale half backs tackled him together. Quarter back Gage called the ends in and worked the wedge for four yards right through Heffelfinger's arms. Yale's rushers were breaking through the line and Lake was quickly downed. Trafford gaind slightly through Winter, but when Corbett tried the same place the heavy Yale tackle got by and downed Corbett without gain.
Harvard's third down. Trafford punted to McCormick on the Yale 45-yard line. McCormick made twenty yards between Newell and Hallowell; Heffelfinger two yards. Winter fumbled the ball and Corbett dropped on it. Corbett gained eight yards through left end and tackle. Trafford tried to get by Winter, but lost five yards. Lake made no gain and Trafford kicked again to the Yale full back.
On the down, McCormick got around Emmons for six yards. The ball went to Harvard for holding. Winter broke through and downed Trafford with a loss. Corbett couldn't gain the five yards and Trafford punted again to Bliss. Yale gained nothing on the V. On the second down Bliss punted. Corbett muffed and Yale dropped on the ball. On the second down Morison was called behind the line for a punt and Corbett muffed again.
McClung's Brilliant Rushes.Yale had the ball on Harvard's 30-yard line and Bliss got ten yards more through good interference around the right end. Unfair holding gave the ball to Harvard. Again Harvard had the chance to rush, and again she could not gain. Trafford punted out of bounds. Yale got the ball in the middle of the field and McClung, aided by beautiful interference, made a most brilliant sally for twenty-five yards around Hallowell. Heffelfinger, Morison and McCormick advanced the leather to Harvard's 15-yard line. Another rush and it was only ten yards from the goal.
Harvard's Firm Srand.Then Harvard played hard and Yale bucked the line in vain. McClung took the ball back twenty yards to keep it for Yale; but they lost it on four downs. Trafford punted. Bliss kicked in return, but Newell broke through and stopped it, getting the ball on Yale's 45-yard line.
Harvard could not gain and Yale got the ball. Bliss kicked to Trafford. Neither he nor Lake could gain, and so the ball was sent back to Bliss. McClung made a slight gain, but Bliss dropped the ball. Emmons fell on it; but the whistle rang out sharp and clear, announcing that the first half was ended.
Yale, 4; Harvard, 0.Second Half.Harvard had the ball. Lake was put behind the V and gained 8 yards. Corbett made no gain around the right end and Lake got only two yards between Dexter and Waters. Trafford punted.
Bliss caught the ball on Yale's 35-yard line. On the first down he made four yards between Waters and Emmons. McCormick made two more in the hole prepared by Morison and Sanford. Then Bliss and McClung tried the old criss-cross trick. Hallowell and Newell broke through and spoiled it, downing the Yale captain with a loss. No gain and Bliss punted out of bounds. Trafford got the ball, Hallowell touched it in bounds and gained two yards. The Harvard forwards did no effective interfering and again Trafford punted to Bliss. He attempted to run but Newell downed him on Yale's 25-yard line.
