As Computer Science Professor and former Dean of the College Harry Lewis pointed out in an interview last week, there is one area where Harvard might be able to trim the fat: paying for trademarks. Take a look at the bottom of Harvard's homepage, www.harvard.edu, under "Trademark notice." Apparently the Provost's Office is paying good money to maintain or apply for the following trademarks:
- Hahvahd
- Lessons Learned
- Managing Yourself
- Memo to the CEO
- Pocket Mentor
- Ask What You Can Do
- The World's Thinking
Hmm...FlyBy guesses The World's Thinking whether Harvard really needs to be paying for the trademark "Pocket Mentor" with more professors leaving the Faculty than joining it, sections growing larger, and professors raising the alarm that departments may get consolidated as a result of Dean Smith's call to "reshape" FAS.
