A bicyclist suffered serious injuries after being hit by a car near Boston University’s DeWolfe Boathouse on Monday evening, according to the Massachusetts State Police, who said the investigation was ongoing.
Monday’s crash comes after two fatal cyclist collisions with vehicles over the summer, which spurred the Cambridge City Council to call for stronger truck regulations. In June, a Florida woman died after she was hit by a truck in Harvard Square. Then, only two weeks later, a second cyclist was killed in Kendall Square in a similar collision.
According to Cambridge Police Department spokesperson Robert Goulston, CPD assisted the Massachusetts State Police response for a “serious crash involving a motor vehicle and a cyclist.” The current medical state of the cyclist remains unclear.
Over the summer, the Cambridge City council unanimously voted to ask City Manager Yi-An Huang ’05 to advocate for stronger legislative protections and precautionary measures for trucks. At a meeting earlier this month, the city council reiterated that the power to ensure cyclist safety lies with the federal government.
