Final Score: Northeastern 7, Harvard 6
Bottom of the 10th:
- PITCHING CHANGE: Zach Hofeld takes the mound. The rookie made a big impression with his complete game, 2-1 victory over Cornell. Let's see if he can build on that momentum.
- Nice play by Kramer who charged in from first base to make a sliding catch for out number one.
- Maguire walks in a six-pitch at-bat. Runner on first, one out.
- A come-backer to Hofeld nearly results in a double play, but a strong throw from Stoeckel comes in just late as DiCesare legs it out avoid making the final out of the inning.
- Passed ball puts DiCesare in scoring position and puts a little more pressure on Hofeld.
- Intentionally walking Tamsin again. Let's see if Walsh is right twice.
- Woah. Lyon hits a ball JUST foul down the third base line which would have scored the winning run.
- Game over, Stoeckel almost saved the run by keeping the ball in the infield, but DiCesare came home and gave the Huskies the win. Tough break for Harvard.
Top of the 10th:
- We're going into extras! Free baseball, although I don't know if anyone paid much to get in here in the first place.
- O'Hara hits one sharply to right but it's tracked down.
- Pinch hitter Chris Rouches in. A part of the logjam at first base, Rouches doesn't play much, but he's a great athlete and has a ton of raw power. Of course, raw power doesn't mean much if you don't hit the ball, and Rouces strikes out.
- O'Neill goes down on an ugly swing.
- Meehan is proving adept at taking down the Huskies big bats. Pesanello goes down looking, 13 homers and all.
- Compagnone flies out to left. 2 outs.
- Well-placed single through the right side for Josh Porter, although it looked like Kramer could have had it if he didn't run to the bag at first immediately.
- Pinch runner Dave Fisher comes in the game at first, although his services are not needed as Gustafson quickly pops out to right.
Top of the 9th:
- With the game tied at 6, it would behoove Harvard to score this inning, especially with its bullpen as shallow as it is right now due to injuries.
- Dan Zailskas, the pride of Milton Academy (aside from Crimson writers Emily Cunningham and Tim Walsh)...strikes out.
- Stoeckel pops out to right.
- Albright gets ringed up to end the inning. Bottom of the 9th coming up.
Bottom of the 8th:
- PITCHING CHANGE: Taylor Meehan, normally an infielder, comes into pitch. Alex Fox comes in to hit for Guillemette.
- Fox thinks he drew a walk and starts jogging to first only to be called back. He then hits a ground ball up the middle that Jenkins shows some good range to get to, but the throw is off-balance and a bit weak and Fox is safe.
- Maguire tries to bunt Fox over, but sends the ball straight to Meehan who gets the force at second.
- A weird sequence had Maguire going to second on a delayed steal. Kramer's throw was off and Griff couldn't lay down the tag.
- Meehan throws a nice pitch to DiCesare who whiffs on a bad swing. Weak sauce.
- With first open, Harvard intentionally walks Tamsin to get to Lyon. Still, a questionable move with Lyon being the Huskies' best hitter.
- Poppa Joe knows best. Coach Walsh makes the right move as Lyon grounds out to Stoeckel.
Top of the 8th:
- Top of the order for the Crimson, with O'Neill coming up to the plate. It's only a one-run game, but right now is Harvard's best shot at coming back in this one.
- O'Neill draws a leadoff walk, always a good sign.
- Rogers drops down a bunt straight back to Smith, but makes the play a lot closer at first with some good hustling. O'Neill advances to second with Matt Vance up.
- The Captain delivers. Vance pokes a single past the second baseman and the game is tied. Vance also advanced to second on the throw home.
- Kramer, who has been raking the ball, comes up to the plate.
- PITCHING CHANGE: Smith comes out of the game. Southpaw Sheldon McDonald, a Spruce Grove, Alberta native, comes in to try and snuff out the Crimson rally.
- Vance JUST gets back on a pickoff attempt at second. Phew.
- Apparently Vance didn't learn from his mistake. The Captain gets caught up in a rundown and tagged out.
- Kramer flies out to center to end the inning.
Bottom of the 7th:
- The Crimson is throwing out its aces. Senior Shawn Haviland now comes in to pitch.
- Haviland gives up a sharp single to start off the inning.
- O'Hara shows off a strong arm at third, taking a slow ground ball at third and almost starting a double play. One out, runner on first.
- Stoeckel gets a grounder at short and flips it to Jenkins, but Jenkins throw to first bounces and Kramer can't pick it. No double play. Makes you miss Brendan Byrne, last year's captain who formed a very slick double play combo with Stoeckel.
- In any event, Haviland gets a flyout to end the inning. No harm, no foul.
Top of the 7th:
- Trevor Smith comes in to pitch for the Huskies. He's not listed on the stat sheet, so this might be his first appearance. Not a bad place to start your season if that's the case.
- Albright's first at-bat results in a weak ground out to second.
- O'Hara rips a liner to right but the Huskies have him played perfectly and the ball is caught.
- Griff Jenkins flies out and the Crimson offense is suddenly stagnant.
Bottom of the 6th:
- Brad Unger, who apparently was not the H-Club t-shirt sporting man spotted in the bullpen, is in to pitch. While he did pitch on Sunday, this might be his throw day anyway so there's no point in not letting him get his tosses in during game action.
- Maguire flies out to Vance on the first pitch of the inning.
- DiCesare dribbles a grounder to Unger for the easy out.
- In other changes, Kramer has moved to first with freshman Tyler Albright now behind the dish.
- Tamsin sneaks a grounder between third and short to extend the inning.
- Lyon hits a hard line drive to center. Vance turns the wrong way but rights himself to make the catch.
Top of the 6th:
- Kramer pops out to the catcher behind the plate, and Zailskas follows with a grounder to second. This is not the time for the Crimson bats to fall asleep.
- Looks like we'll have to wait till the next inning to see if they wake up. Stoeckel grounds out sharply to short.
Bottom of the 5th:
- Lyon rips a single through the third base hole with the powerful Pesanello coming up to the plate.
- Pesanello lofts a fly ball to right, snagged by Dillon O'Neill for the first out.
- Nice piece of hitting by Campagnone, who slices an opposite field liner down the right field line for a double. Second and third for the Huskies.
- A passed ball scores Lyon and the game is tied at 5 apiece.
- Sac fly gives Northeastern the lead. 6-5 Huskies.
- Guillemette bounces out to Stoeckel to end the inning but the damage is done as Northeastern takes the lead for the first time today.
Top of the 5th:
-6'9 senior pitcher Brad Unger, who pitched 6 2/3 solid innings on Sunday, is sporting a pair of jeans and an H-Club t-shirt. Just thought you should know.
- O'Neill pops up to second, making this the first inning that Harvard's leadoff hitter hasn't reached base.
- Rogers makes solid contact but the ball is tracked down in center field.
- Vance grounds out to short to end the frame.
Bottom of the 4th:
- Leadoff opposite field single from Josh Porter.
- Noble beat writer Jake Fisher has descended into the bowels of Fenway in search of sustenance. God speed Jake.
- Some confusion on the field. David Gustafson thought he was hit by a pitch, but it's been called a foul ball. Still a runner on first with no outs.
- It's a moot point, because Sestanovich hit Gustafson with the very next pitch.
- All kinds of ridiculousness going on down on the field. There was a lot of shifting by the defense, some errant throws, and nothing changed at all.
- Gullemette flies out to left.
- Ryan Maguire hits a hard line drive, but right at Vance in center. No dice.
- A foul ball into the seats inspires a mad dash for a free souvenir. A boy of 6 or so chases it down. Shortly after, another foul ball makes a hero out of Huskies DH Mike Tamsin, who makes a grab.
-ATTENTION: Famed Globe reporter Dan Shaughnessy has just entered the press box. Nothing like a little star power to spice up Harvard baseball.
- Tony DiCesare gets the best of Sestanovich in a very long at-bat, smoking a double to plate two runners and bring the Huskies within one.
- Shaughnessy's son plays for BC, which will take on UMass in the Championship Game later today.
- PITCHING CHANGE: Senior Max Warren comes in for Sestanovich.
- Warren induces a dribbler which Kramer picks up and throws to first to preserve the Crimson lead.
Top of the 4th:
- Looks like the Crimson has been working on its fundamentals. Harry Douglas drops a perfect bunt to get on and give Harvard yet another leadoff baserunner.
- O'Hara pops out to short.
- Griff Jenkins takes a mighty hack, no doubt trying to make my prediction of him hitting it over that big green wall a reality, but valiantly strikes out.
- Douglas gunned down trying to steal second. On to the bottom of the frame.
Bottom of the 3rd:
-Mike Tamsin leads off the inning for the Huskies with a single past a diving Griff Jenkins.
- Big bat Mike Lyon flies out to center. 1 out.
- Frank Pesanello makes a bid to get the ball over the Monster. Looks like the wind killed it though, and it's just a long, high flyout to Rogers.
- Sestanovich catches Campagnone staring. Inning over.
Top of the 3rd:
- Kramer slaps a grounder through the hole at third for a leadoff single. The Crimson has had the leadoff hitter on in every inning so far.
- A confusing play, possibly a hit-and-run gone wrong, results in Kramer being gunned down at second. Zailskas pops out to right immediately after.
- And the first Monster hit of the day goes to Jeff Stoeckel, Jack of All Trades.
- Another weird delayed steal, another Crimson baserunner nailed. Inning over.
- Harvard 5, Northeastern 2
Bottom of the 2nd:
- David Gustafson rips a shot over Vance's head that bounces around the triangle in center allowing Gustafson to get to third for a leadoff triple.
- Chris Guillemette grounds out to Stoeckel as Gustafson comes home to make it a 5-2 Harvard lead.
- Speedy Ryan Maguire tries to bunt his way on board, but Sestanovich shows some agility jumping off the mound and flips to Douglas at first.
- Tony DiCesare can't catch up with a Sestanovich pitch and the Crimson gets out of the inning with minimal damage.
- 5-2 Harvard
Top of the 2nd:
- Senior shortstop Jeff Stoeckel draws a walk, just hours after making "insightful comments" in photography section according to a fellow baseball beat writer. Jeff Stoeckel: Renaissance Man.
- Junior Harry Douglas whiffs, bringing up rookie Sean O'Hara.
- O'Hara drops a beauty of a bunt and easily reaches first while moving Stoeckel over.
- Senior Griff Jenkins, set to wed on Aug. 9, gives his fiance an early wedding present with an opposite field single to right. After Griff's blast against Brown last season, he's my pick to hit it over the Green Monster today.
- O'Neill grounds to short, but the exchange at second goes awry and an easy double play turns into an error and a run for Harvard, still with the bases loaded and one out.
-The Huskies defense is, for lack of a better term, dreadful. Another error on another easy double play sends two runners home. 4-1 Harvard.
- The collective mind of The Crimson's baseball beat has finally ascertained that the Northeastern pitcher is in fact, #12, Kris Dabrowiecki. I will not be able to spell that last name correctly on a consistent basis, so Kris will have to do.
- Rogers steals third as Vance walks.
- Vance goes for second and gets caught in a rundown. Heads up baserunning gets Rogers home before Vance gets tagged out.
- 5-1 Harvard after one and a half.
Bottom of the 1st:
- Rookie Ben Sestanovich on the mound for Harvard. He's had some good outings this season for the Crimson, and he starts this one out with a K.
- DH Mike Tamsin, a .345 hitter, gets a single for the Huskies' first hit. Runner on first with one out.
- Huskies slugger Mike Lyon slams a double over Vances head in center and ties the game up. Lyon is a beast, batting .405 with 9 homers and 29 rbi.
- Northeastern cleanup hitter Frank Pesanello has 13 home runs this season, as in, one more than the entire Harvard lineup. Nevertheless, Sestanovich gets the big guy to pop out to shallow center field. Two outs.
- Sestanovich beans Frank Campognone.
- Sestanovich gets out of trouble as Josh Porter lines out to O'Neill in right.
Top of the 1st:
- Freshman Dillon O'Neill leads off the game with a single up the middle. Look for the rookie to show off his wheels early.
- O'Neill steals, with Matt Rogers whiffing along the way.
- Captain Matt Vance comes up and delivers with a sharp single that plates O'Neill and gives Harvard a 1-0 lead. Wouldn't be surprised if Vance keeps the running game going.
- After a strikeout by senior Matt Kramer, Vance takes second and sophomore Dan Zailskas comes up with a chance to drive another run in.
- Zailskas dribbles a grounder to short but the Northeastern shortstop makes a bad throw that the first baseman can't pick. The ball skipped away a few feet and Vance made a run for home, but was out by a mile.
- Harvard: 2 hits, 1 run, 1 Huskies error
Welcome everyone to Fenway Park for the consolation game of the 2008 Baseball Beanpot between Harvard and Northeastern. It's a beautiful day for baseball and not to mention the great location, even if Fenway isn't hosting its customary sellout crowd right now.
