Andre’ Akpan, the star sophomore forward for the Harvard men’s soccer team, was named the national Player of the Week by College Soccer News, the publication announced yesterday.

With two goals and an assist in the Crimson’ 5-0 win over Fairfield Saturday, Akpan padded his sophomore statline.

He will enter Ivy League play this weekend at Cornell with seven goals and five assists, both good for the team lead.

After feeding junior Mike Fucito’s game-opening goal, Akpan added two insurance goals to cap the Harvard scoring in the rout.

With this week’s recognition, Akpan adds to his ever-growing list of league and national accolades.

The Crimson’s star forward has already been named to the Ivy League Honor Roll twice this season, and picked up conference Player of the Week honors Sept. 17 after scoring game-winning goals in consecutive Harvard victories over Boston University and Vermont.

In August, College Soccer News named the sophomore to its Preseason All-America Second Team, while Soccer America and MajorLeague Soccer Magazine honored Akpan with Preseason First Team nods.

College Soccer News also recognized the Crimson as a whole, moving the team up two notches from 11th to 9th in the national rankings.

Updated national rankings from Soccer Times, Soccer America, and NSCAA/adidas had not been released as of yesterday.
