“We’re not opposing the concept of Falldown,” Chadbourne said. “It’s just we can’t fund them at that level.”
Despite the professed support for Falldown’s project, many council members derided Cianflone’s request. One council member suggested allocating one dollar to Falldown.
After the meeting, Blickstead sent a message to the council’s e-mail list, UC-general, apologizing to Cianflone for members who “did not give [Cianflone] the required respect.”
Council Treasurer Oulu Wang ’06 described the potential budgetary impact of funding Falldown.
“This represents eight to 10 percent of all the money left to allocate,” Wang said. “If we made this exception for everyone we would go bankrupt.”
Other council members suggested that giving such a large grant to one organization could put other on-campus organizations at a disadvantage.
“How many other student groups could we fund with $5,000?” asked Justin R. Chapa ’05.
The council also acknowledged the efforts of John F. Voith ’07 in organizing the Battle of the Bands, which took place in Loker Commons on Saturday night.
Mahan called the event, which drew between 600 and 700 people throughout the night as “very successful.”
