Last year he was profiled in the New York Post, where he discussed his most recent military reactivation and his last parachute drop, made at the age of 64. He retired from military service as a Green Beret with the rank of lieutenant colonel.
Born in New York, Herbert studied chemistry at Columbia University, where he received his B.S. and his M.D. and also earned a law degree.
Herbert also worked at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Mount Sinai Medical School.
At the time of his death, Herbert was a professor of medicine at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and chief of the hematology and nutrition research laboratory at the Bronx Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
He is survived by his wife Marilynne, five children and four grandchildren.
A memorial service for Herbert is planned for January 6 at the New York Academy of Medicine.
