Violent Incidents Prompt Silent Vigil

Several youths who said they frequent the Pit joined the protesters in condemning last week's violence and said they were insulted by any attempt to link their peers to the attacks.

"They think we're all violent. The kids that did it don't hang out here," said Scott Nickerson, a self-described Pit kid. "Ninety percent of the kids here have a button or a patch with a swastika and a line through it."

After twenty minutes in the Pit, the group marched to the other end of the Square, forming into a circle at the corner of Brattle Street opposite Eliot Square.

Holding an anti-skinhead sign, Erik A. Beach '02 said the attacks angered him.

The Harvard community must make it clear that "we're not going to tolerate this," he said.

While calling yesterday's rally a success, Cummings said he wishes he will not have to organize another anti-violence rally.

"I hope the necessity for events like this doesn't continue," Cummings said.
