Standing Up for Students

Brandeis decision grants unfairly wide powers of disciplinary action to colleges

Currently, most colleges--especially Harvard--are very vague in their handbooks about disciplinary procedures, which exacerbates the problem even more. Without specific guarantees in the handbook, universities have the ability to interpret and modify their procedure depending on the specific case; its application may not be uniform across the board to every student.

Taken together, the consequences of the SJC's ruling illustrate just how powerless college students are in a disciplinary situation. The court missed a chance to reinforce students' rights on college campuses.
