Armstrong Completes Term as Head Overseer

Armstrong explains that there is no mandatoryretirement rules for Faculty so the furtheradditions of female Faculty "will come alongslowly. It has to!"

Harvard administrators and alumni praiseArmstrong's leadership and dedication to theUniversity.

"It has been delightful to work with her. She'ssmart and, most importantly, she understandsHarvard. And it can be a complicated place," saysVice Chair of the Executive Board of OverseersStephen P. Kay '56.

Joan M. Hutchins '61, a colleague ofArmstrong's on the Board of Overseers and the newpresident of the Board, praises the plans for thenew Radcliffe in particular.

"I am very pleased with the plans for theinstitute and [Armstrong] has certainly had a hugepart in that success," she says.

"I have been an admirer of Charlotte for manyyears. She has so much to offer and reallyunderstands alumni and their concerns. It is aprivilege to follow behind her. She's a role modelfor me," she adds.

Since she lived in Radcliffe's Briggs Hall,Armstrong has come a long way from the days ofcatcalls and the first Radcliffe crew. Her firstdorm has been displaced by Hilles library, and hercollege as she knew it is gone.

Nevertheless, Armstrong has persevered and, asshe says, "maintained the change.
