'The Croatian George Washington'

On the political side, Tudjman developed the country by introducing infrastructure improvements and economic privatization. Thanks to these large projects, the entire center of the capital of Zagreb was reconstructed. Privatization proved to be a more difficult obstacle, and many believe it was conducted in an unfair manner, giving preference to his party associates. However, the economy did not fall into depression, and Tudjman was able to introduce a stable currency, the kuna, avoiding the rampant inflation of the old Yugoslav dinar.

So, why has there been such a cold response from the West to his death? Tudjman ruled with self-confidence and determination. In negotiations he was tough; on political necessities like self-determination he was insistent. As the unifier of the Croatian people, support for him was incredibly high. From the outside, this was taken to be a sign of undemocratic rule. However, the fact that almost half a million people attended his funeral proves that the internal support he enjoyed was genuine.

In the end, his achievements are difficult to assess. Saved lives cannot be counted. Freedom cannot be quantified. Nevertheless, his achievements are also among the most significant ones in the history of Croatia. They are the foundations for a democratic and prosperous future. Franjo Tudjman has laid out these foundations, and for those he will be remembered.
