Our Town

In Klein's case, "run and hide" was the most peaceable solution to fire door conflict. However, there are those who spend a great deal of time wondering about the suite beyond the fire-door.

Jonathan D. Steinberger '01 actually found romance beyond the fire door--a relationshipwhich began with him and his roommates wonderingenough about the land on the other side of thedoor to do something about it.

"About a week into school my roommates and Irealized that we had this door," he explains. "Wecould hear laughing; see lights. So we thoughtthat we would be friendly. We put together thisnote saying: "We're not psychotic or anything, wejust wanted to introduce ourselves.'"

The women across the door replied with theirown introductory note and things took off fromthere.

"We had this weird fire door exchange thinggoing on where we were passing notes back andforth--it was very grade school," Steinbergersays.

After a few days, the men decided to introducethemselves to their new pen-pals.

"We went over there and it was a bit of alet-down, just because it had been so built up,"he says. "We said dumb stuff like how we likedtheir Christmas lights."

But the two groups did hit it off, and alleventually attended a Latin dance the nextweekend. Steinberger claims that the dance was keyin solidifying the burgeoning friendship.

"Nobody can Mambo like I can--I think that'swhat won them over," he claims, refusing, though,to demonstrate his skills.

Soon, the fire door was no longer a barrier tolove.

"We'd knock on the door when we were going todinner, things like that. It was like an extendedgroup of roommates," he says.

Steinberger and his roommates ended up blockingwith the women across the fire door and one becamehis girlfriend. He says he is not quite clear whatled to fire door romance: "We started spendingmore and more time together...there were thesignals...I don't know how it happened."

So, does Steinberger recommend fire doorintroductions as a dating technique? "Yeah, definitely" he says, giving hope to those stillwondering about the world beyond the door
