Baseball Bests Bears in Extra Innings

Captain Albers Knocks in Huling With Game-Winner in 12th to Top Maine

Again in the eleventh, Harvard's sloppy defense seemed to doom them, as the Crimson allowed Maine junior secondbaseman Keith Croteau to reach third with two outs on an error, a stolen base, and a wild pitch. Croteau was then singled home on an infield hit that deflected off the pitcher's mound. Maine was on top again, 4-3.

But in the bottom of the 12th, Harvard was up to the challenge of "last ups" for the third time in the contest, winning on Albers's single to right.

With one out and a man on third in a tie game, standard strategy would seem to have called for an intentional walk of Albers, who is hitting .396 and leads the Crimson with 13 RBIs. But a surprised Albers got a hitter's pitch and drove it deep into the gap.

"I was expecting [a walk]...and the first pitch they threw me was a curve-ball way out of the strike zone," he said. "So I said 'I'm gonna look for a fastball,' and they gave me a pretty easy pitch to hit, and luckily I was able to come through."

Senior Frank Hogan pitched a one-run twelfth for the Crimson and recorded the victory, as he improved his record to 3-1 on the year. Maine  4 Harvard  5
