Senate Committee Considers Paring Federal Student Loans

Proposed Tax Would Cost Harvard $8.4M Over Seven Years

Tracey Bohannon '99 said both she and her sister, who attends Duke University, receive federal aid.

"She and I are getting a small enough amount before the cuts," she said. "It's hard to get enough money for both of us to go to school."

Kassenbaum's proposal aims to meet the stipulations of the fiscal 1996 budget resolution, which called for $10 billion in savings in this area.

Kassenbaum's committee was originally scheduled to act on the measures yesterday, but heated opposition from college students and administrators forced a delay, the Globe reported.

Republicans have maintained that balancing the budget and eliminating the national debt will ultimately be best for today's students.

"The House Republicans are just not very pro-education," said Perry. "I'm very upset."

Bohannon added that even the smallest cut in her aid would jeopardize her ability to pay for school. "It would definitely put a strain on my family.
