After a stolen base, Katz registered the game's decisive hit, a soft liner down the left field line than cleared the bases. He then took second when Kessler overran the ball.
Although Hogan's effectiveness decreased dramatically as the inning progressed, he was left in to absorb the majority of the damage.
"I felt strong going into the inning," he said. "I just made two big mistakes that weren't even hard hit. Things just didn't go our way."
Only after sophomore third baseman Peter Albers booted a soft grounder was senior Jamie Irving summoned from the bullpen. Even he could not stop the bleeding, however, as Eagle right fielder Kevin Penwell bounced a single to right, knocking in the final run of the inning.
The Crimson still had one final chance to salvage the game. Three singles loaded the bases with one out in the top of the ninth, with the team's third and fourth hitters, freshman Brett Vankoski and Crowley, coming to the plate.
But after Vankoski plated a run on a fielder's choice, Crowley--who represented the go-ahead run-flied harmlessly to left, brining this latest exercise in frustration to a most disheartening conclusion.
