On the Bandwagon

Breaking Training

Harvard looked so good last Saturday that the temptation is to crown them the Ivy League champs right now. It looked that good. All of a sudden, eyes are raised towards the Princeton (Oct. 23) and Dartmouth (Oct. 30) matchups.

How tough can they be? Not as tough as us, `cause we are great-goddamn good. Bring `em on, any time, any place.

These thoughts will be rudely surprised this weekend when Harvard runs into William and Mary, a Division I-AA power off to a poor 1-2 start and looking for redemption. The Tribe topped the Crimson 36-16 last year and is favored to do so again this year.

The football team will, in all probability, lose to William and Mary this weekend.

But that isn't a message to jump off the bandwagon. It's not a message to jump on the bandwagon. It's a message to let it roll further first.

The facts are clear: 1) Columbia wasn't as significant a win as one might want to believe. The Lions played poorly, very poorly at The Stadium on Saturday. Columbia Coach Ray Tellier said he was embarrassed after the game. 2) William and Mary won't be as significant a loss: More talented teams tend to defeat less talented ones. It's the natural course of human events. And William and Mary is much better than of the Ivy League.

These things happen. They are to be expected. But if Harvard pulls off the beyond-improbable and wins this weekend?

Then--I'm jumping on the bandwagon.
