"There is no question [social life forfirst-years will change]," said Dean of FreshmenElizabeth S. Nathans. "I think the law is prettyclear and we expect people will uphold the law."

Many first-years said they thoroughlydisapproved of the law. "The old law seems betterto me," said Jon B. Gill '97. "Everyone drinksanyway, so why deal with it."

Despite Nathans' stated commitment to upholdthe law in the Yard, proctors might have theirhands full this year. A number of students saidthe law will be next to impossible to enforce.

"People will still find ways to drink," saidSharon N. Percell '97, adding she has already seenunderage students drinking this year. "But theywill be a lot more careful when people come into aparty.
