Spring Concerts Challenged

Council Member Suggests Redirecting Funds to Houses

"The U.C. ought to be the center of life at Harvard," said council member Mike Beys '94.

Although a large campus-wide event is risky, campus unification is one of the most important roles that the council should play, Beys said.

"If the houses are the center of life at Harvard, then what's the point of having a...council?" Beys said. "Theoretically, what's the point of taking money from the students to give it back to the houses?"

Beys said that if the event was planned correctly, costs recovered from the spring concert could go to the houses at the end of the year.

"Every concert seems to get better and better," Gabay said. "What students don't seem to understand is that even when we lose money, we make it up the following term."

Co-chair of the Lowell House Committee Jason Trowley '94 said, "it would be great to get a college-wide event because we don't have too many of them."

Slated for Sunday's discussion is a proposal to bring Saturday Night Live comedian Adam Sandler in the spring, according to Beys. Beys also said that it is rumored that the council might consider bringing the Black Crowes to Harvard, although the idea has not been brought to the floor for debate.
