Trial Lawyer Group Accuses School of Sexual Discrimination

Harvard's athletic department has "been very aware of the issues," said Patricia W. Henry, Associate Athletic Director at Harvard.

"We study ourselves very carefully and very often and have since the early `70s," she said.

The athletic department reports on the status of women's athletics every two years, Henry said. The department also performs surveys each season.

"We try to do as much information gathering as we can," Henry said.

Harvard statistics show that men and women are nearly equally represented in varsity sports. There are 21 varsity men's sports and 19 varsity women's sports.

Women make up the majority of recreation class participants. But women participate far less in club and intramural sports--25 percent in Harvard's 23 club sports, and 28 percent in intramurals.
