"Anyone's Taking Me Seriously Is Scary"

MAIL:

It doesn't take a genius to figure out that gays will never be happy until they think that others think they're happy. While many people (from all lifestyles) need reassurance from others to believe that they're, say, intelligent or pretty, if someone needs someone else to tell them that they're happy, then they're really not happy.

Of course, no one should generalize just based on the actions of the BGLSA and the group of radicals promoting the pro-homosexuality ideology. There are probably several people at Harvard with same-sex sexual attractions who don't feel a compelling need to convince others that they feel good about themselves. Grunwald writes that his roommate is one such person. Grunwald expresses surprise that I said I'm happy for people who believe like his roommate apparently does, as if I would on the contrary be happy for their misery.

My point that "homosexuals are not truly happy despite whatever facade they display," however, is still valid no matter what Grunwald's roommate says, because my definition of happiness rests neither on appearances nor self-testimony but what to me and many others is metaphysical reality.

I'm pretty certain that Grunwald doesn't ground his definition of happiness in the same realm as I do, and this letter to the editor is not the place to explain mine. But before Grunwald tries to show that I don't know what I'm talking about in making a statement like I did, he must either disprove my statement in the metaphysical realm or disprove the existence of a metaphysical realm. Good luck to him!

As I said in the beginning of this letter, not-so-good sportswriters often exaggerate, and do a bad job trying to make the unimportant seem important. Quite frankly, I don't know what to make of Grunwald's showering of attention in my direction. His fervent attempts to portray me as a menacing imbecile make me wonder why he's trying to make such a big deal out of me and my views. He seems to take me more seriously that I take myself (and anyone's taking me seriously is scary).

I would only suggest that Grunwald have a little more levity in dealing with people like me, and a little more levity with himself. Robert Wasinger '94   Peninsula writer   Vice President, AALARM
