JV Sports: Looking For Recognition

The JV Notebook

Harvard lost the first game, 6-3, and the second, 10-5. The team's winless season is a bit deceiving each of Harvard's opponents has played over 20 games.

In the first game, Harvard hurler William Mercer went the distance, allowing six hits, walking three and striking out one.

In the second game, Harvard led, 5-3, but Rhode Island rallied to score seven runs to win the game. Chip Lippman was Harvard's pitcher. He allowed 10 hits, walked four batters and struck out two.

Tim Rea, Dave Forman and Joe Currier all hit homers for the Crimson.

Currier had an outstanding day. He went six for seven, which included four singles, a double and a homer.

"We're pleased with our showing," JV Coach Mac Singleton said. "We're going to start winning from here on. We're starting to gel together."

Lacrosse

The women's JV team team improved its recod to 4-1-1 on the season with a 7-2 thumping of Yale Saturday. Elizabeth Samet tallied two goals, while Julie Clifford, Jodi Buonanno, Martha Abbruzzese, Tracey Hackeling and Cecelia Kurzman all recorded a goal apiece.

Loreen Costa turned in a stellar performance in goal.

Harvard's other wins have come against the B.U. Club, 14-5, Oxford, 15-7, and Bridgewater State, 16-10. The laxwomen tied Dartmouth, 7-7, and dropped an 8-6 decision to the Boston Lacrosse Club, a squad composed of former varsity players from a variety of colleges.

"It's been a really good season," JV Coach Nita Lamborghini said. "We've had some injuries, but our younger players and less experienced players have come along to do a really nice job."

Harvard will square-off against Dartmouth today.

Men's tennis

The men's JV tennis team (7-5) was supposed to play Yale this weekend, but the match has been rescheduled for this weekend.

"There's a lot of tradition between Harvard, Yale and Princeton," JV Coach Steve Gertensfeld said. "It's very exciting from that standpoint. It should be a real battle."
