The Scouting Report

Offensive Line: Center Dave Gazzaniga, a second team All-Ivy selection last year and a team co-captain this season, heads a big Big Green unit. Sophomore right tackle Matt Dunning (6-ft., 3-in., 250-lbs.) and junior right guard David Janssen (6-ft., 2-in., 240-lbs.) provide a tall wall around the Dartmouth QBs.

Defensive Line: A solid, but unexceptional group. Sophomore tackle Mike O'Flynn is a young gun. Junior nose guard Matt Kelley (6-ft., 1-in., 250-lbs.) and junior tackle Kevin Luensmann (6-ft., 2-in., 245-lbs.) are big enough. But is this crew good enough to stop Hinz and pressure Yohe?

Linebackers: A tackling factory. Senior Paul Sorensen, a first team Academic All-American last year, leads the Green with 47 tackles. Co-Captain Paul Mitchell is second in hits with 42. The other linebackers in the Green's Multiple Base 50 defense are Jay Swett and Jeff Blackburn.

Secondary: Cornerback Scott Sims is the Big Green's all-time leader in interceptions with 12. He has five pick-offs this year and is third on the team in tackles with 31. Yohe versus Sims will make for an interesting air duel, like Snoopy vs. the Red Baron.

Kicking Game: Kicker Carl Romero doesn't get to exercise his leg much. He has converted two of four field goal attempts. The punting game is solid. Rob Hibbard is averaging 38.5 yards per kick with a long of 62 yards. He has gotten plenty of work--18 kicks in four games.

Intangibles: Memorial Field in Hanover, N.H., should be packed for this one. If Dartmouth scores first, look for the crowd to become a factor in the game. A victory over Harvard might be just the thing Green Coach Buddy Teevens, in his second year, needs to turn his program around. Dartmouth has shown itself capable of scoring a lot. Against Penn at home, the Green scored 27 points.

Coach: Buddy Teevens, Ivy League Player of the Year in 1978 when he was the Big Green QB, was hired last year with the hopes of Hanover on his shoulders. He has had rough going. Last year his team went 2-8. This year it is off to a 1-3 start, same as Harvard. Buddy would love to get a victory out of this one. Perhaps he'll put on the pads himself.
