Candidates for election "take their licks atit, but Huntington is a slightly differentproblem. There was a file circulated onHuntington, and this decision is a reflection ofthat file," said one NAS member, who spoke on thecondition of anonymity.
Academy members contacted yesterday declined todiscuss the specifics of the floor discussion, butone NAS member said that the heated debate overHuntington's candidacy has left "a little bit oftension" between Class V and the rest of theAcademy.
"In my estimation, [today's elction] hascreated a certain amount of unease between Class Vand the rest of the academy since they came downso strongly on the side of Huntington and made ita major issue," the Academy member said.
"Huntington's defeat may have caused them torealize that their position in the academy is notas strong as they might have thought," the membersaid.
The Academy elected all of the other 60candidates who had received the necessary numberof mailed ballots to be considered for election,Academy members said.
Among the 59 scholars elected, two are Harvardprofessors. They are Professor of Astronomy andApplied Physics Patrick Thaddeus and Professor ofSocial Anthropology, Emeritus John W.M. Whiting
