Or, west of Mishawaka, just as you climb into Medicine Bow mountain range, turn north on the unpaved road toward Glendevey, then double back eastward, following signs to Red heather Lakes. A few miles from the Wyoming border, these lakes are set as if a water bird shook itself, leaving long, clear feathers among the pines. If you like fishing, canoeing or picnics--but not people--this is your place. The stunning lakes are ringed by wildflowers, and in summer thousands of dragonflies hover over the watercolor fields.
And if you're finally tired of bars, and the serenity of camping bores you., then call Pa Legal at Wanderlust Adventures (303-484-1219) to sign up for a whitewater raft trip. Following Route 40 west in Northern Colorado, turn onto Route 318 at Maybell. A spectacular drive down the vermillion bluff will lead you to The Gates of Ledore, huge rocks, and your dock on the Green River. You'll spend three days with eagles and sheep and enough sleepers and rapids to make you happy to get back to the safety of Cambridge. Not only is Legal an expert raftsman, he's a gourmet cook, and after you've survived the hell of Devil's Elbow, he'll rustle you up some trout that'll make you even happier you're alive.
Great Escape
To The Cape
Come late this spring or this summer, thousands of people will head out to Cape Cod to escape from the muggy heat that sits over Boston's downtown and suburbs.
And they'll do a lot of things wrong.
First of all, when they barrel over the Sagamore Bridge from Route 3 they'll probably head straight up they've made it to The Cape until they get to their exit.
The first thing to do is to get off at exit 1 in Sandwich and head down the ramp to Route 6A. Possibly one of the most beautiful little highways in the country, 6A is the North Side's main street, wandering through Sandwich and West Barnstable and Barnstable through Yarmouth Port, Dennis and Brewster. In comparison to the deadly-dull rows of afflicted pine trees along the mid-Cape, as Route 6 is known down there 6A will lead you through cranberry bogs and antique stores and quaint village squares. It may take you another 20 minutes to get where you're going, but you'll be able to savor some of the prettiest parts of The Cape.
Second, you'll soon realize that ice cream is a big dealing on The Cape. Besides the jillions of soft-serv places dispensing chilled liquid linoleum, there are a select few spots that--in price, generosity and yumminess--put Steve's and Herrell's to shame. The best shop on The Cape is on 6A in Dennis village: The Ice Cream Smuggler, where the Oreo is flush with cookies and the Moch.. Chip and Chocolate Chocolate Almond will drive you wild.
