Celtics Lose
Kelly Tripucka and Isiah Thomas paced a fast-quarter surge last night that carried the Detroit Pistons to a 113-101 victory over the Celtics.
Tripucka had three baskets and Thomas a pair during a 14-2 Detroit outburst. The bombardment came at the expense of the Boston second-stringers, as Coach Bill Fitch gave his starters an extra rest in the late going after the Celtics had pulled to within 93-91.
The Celtics played without forward Larry Bird, who was left home with a groin injury. They went on a scoring spree in the third quarter behind the shooting of Kevin McHale and Gerald Henderson to wipe out an early 15-point Detroit lead and pull in front momentarily, 80-78.
