Gridders Knock Off Holy Cross, 10-10

Weather, Defense Dominate As Favored Crusaders Stumble

With 21 seconds left, Villanueva set up for a 41-yard field goal try on third down, then carried the snap straight ahead for four yards, not enough for a first down. He suffered a thigh bruise on the play, and his 37-yard shot at making it 13-7 was wide to the left. (The bruise proved bad enough to leave him on crutches after the game, uncertain for next Saturday's contest.

The wind at his back, Crusader Tony Melink split the uprights from 43 yards out to make it 10-10 with 5:08 left in the third quarter.

The Crimson didn't take advantage of the change of directions in the final period. All three of its possessions consisted of three-downs-and-punt, while the Cross threatened three times.

The first drive ended in Melink's 38-yard kick into the wind falling just short of the crossbar. Cornerback Ken Tarczy stopped the second one, intercepting Muldoon's 30-yard heave at the Harvard 15. After the Cross marched to the Crimson 32, two penalties and a tremendous sack by Garvin with a half-minute remaining preserved the tie.
