Jim Turner scores Harvard's final goal of the night at 8:17 of the third period, and now Eliot suffers the Harvard fans wrath, as tennis balls, beer cans and, that's right, a sieve pelt the Big Red net. The Cornell netminder takes a hike out of the crease, and, since they had been forewarned, the Harvard fans take a trip to the penalty box. The minutes for "roughing", you might say. In any case, the scoreboard shows a two minute penalty on Harvard's number zero, and Crimson defenseman Scott Sangster sits out the penalty, as the referee can't figure any way to get 3350 people into that tiny box. The Harvard fans are not amused
"The Harvard fans have been supporting us really well," said winger Britz, who added an assist to his game opening goal on the night "It means a lot to us"
With 10 minutes left in the game the Harvard side chants "We want the chicken", but the bird has seen enough of the crowd for one evening. And with two-and-a half minutes remaining, they break into that favorite song of winners everywhere. "Nah nah nah nah, nah nah nah nah. Hey hey hey, Goodbyyyye!" A few cries of "We want Dartmouth!" and "Wade Lau! Wode Lau!" pierce the air.
"The crowd meant everything," Crimson wing Tony Visone said. "It changed the whole tempo of the game. You saw how we got pumped up."
The fans start up with their pointing again, now touting Harvard an Cornell with "Winning team . . . losing team! Winning team . . . losing team!", an Ithaca favorite from way back. The band adds its own version: "Ivy school . . . Ag school! Ivy school . . . Ag school!"
Bill Cleary has been the coach at Harvard for 10 years now. Was this the best Harvard crowd he'd ever seen? "Oh yeah," a jubilant Clear said. "The best ever."
After the game, Lau is hugged by Cleary before the pair leaves the ice to head for the lockerroom. The crowd remains in their seats, cheering wildly. Lau turns and gives a wave of his hand.
