Miraculously, the Middies prevailed. At 1-3, Chaikovsky's put-away volley sailed out when two strings popped just as he hit the ball. And Navy won the game's two final points as one volley landed square on the base line and another nicked it.
The Middies then broke Chaikovsky's serve and held Miller's to win the match, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3, and send the Crimson home with a chilling defeat.
Bayliss was almost apologetic in accepting congratulations from the Crimson players. He praised Harvard's sportsmanship, told several Crimson players he was sorry, and admitted that he had not believed Navy had a chance until he learned of Scott Walker's back injury.
"We were lucky. We were lucky," Bayliss said. "If I've got to win a close one like this, the last person in the world I want to do it to is Dave Fish."
Bayliss's class was little consolation, however, to a team that had just seen its hopes for an unbeaten season shattered by a determined Navy squad.
