Dr. Edwin Thomas, the owner of Ye Olde Grist Mill, said yesterday his restaurant--which also served muffins--closed for lack of capital.
"We put in lots of effort but it just wasn't a professional operation," he said.
Thomas said there is a need for fastfood restaurants in Harvard Square, which should make Mug 'n' Muffin a more successful venture than Ye Olde Grist Mill.
The Country Kitchen and the Mug'n'Muffin are both located on Brattle Street.

Both restaurants serve full meals, but specialize in muffins. It is not clear how the battle will be fought, but both restaurant owners said they were confident of success.
