The United Farm Workers' Support Committee decided last night to begin a campaign to urge Harvard students to stop purchasing liquor at the Harvard Provisions Company, which sells UFW-boycotted Gallo wine.

At an organizing meeting last night, the UFW Support Committee agreed to start a petition drive among freshmen next week requesting that the freshman proctors' liquor-purchasing account be transferred to another store.

The petition, addressed to Burris Young, acting dean of freshmen, will be circulated in the Freshman Union.

Each year the dean's office budgets $4 per freshman for the purchase of beer and soda--but not for wine--a Yard proctor said yesterday.

Harvard has traditionally had a charge account with Harvard Provisions, a Harvard Square liquor store.

If proctors wish, however, they may buy liquor in other stores and be reimbursed for their expenses.

Harvard Provisions sells Gallo wine despite a UFW-sponsored boycott protesting Gallo's contract with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. The UFW contends that the Teamsters are not the legitimate representatives of the farm workers.

In addition to the petition campaign, the committee members said they may press the Houses to switch their liquor purchases to another store.

The Support Committee also may picket Harvard Provisions and launch an informational campaign to educate Harvard students about the UFW boycott.
