DeVore explained his statement with one of the Joint Committee's two reasons for keeping Stauder: "Even a person who might disagree fundamentally with Jack's goals or approach, would nevertheless feel that it's inhumane and unfair to fire him summarily at this late date."
Second Reason
The Joint Committee's second reason for keeping Stauder this year is: "In the light of what has occurred at Harvard since the McNamara incident, it would be fair to take into consideration that for some of the younger members of the Faculty, the responsibilities which go with a Corporation appointment as an officer of instruction have been obscured by the failure to take disciplinary action in cases where Faculty participation in or encouragement of disruptive activities were widely believed to have occurred."
Next Year
Assuming that the Soc Rel Department consents to his reappointment this year. Stauder said last Saturday that he doubts the Corporation would keep him after June 1970. "No matter, what the Soc Rel Department recommends me for," Stauder said, "it won't be approved."
DeVore said that a Soc Rel decision on whether to keep Stauder after June 1970 will probably be reached by mid-November.
Stauder said he first heard of the Corporation's decision about him when he listened to WRKO the morning of September 10. That afternoon a Harvard messenger delivered a letter from President Pusey to Stauder, which quoted the Corporation's resolution and contained a copy of the Joint Committee's report.
Stauder added that he is "going to remain politically active in fighting against Harvard expansion and the ways Harvard serves imperialism."
