Faculty Votes to Continue Gen Ed Course Offerings

DECISION IS UNANIMOUS

Thus, in a given area, a student could satisfy the distribution requirement by taking one Gen Ed course, or one-and-a-half or two departmental courses.

The last three Faculty meetings have each set attendance records. Yesterday's meeting was attended by 226 of the Faculty's more than 600 voting members, the largest number in history. 216 attended the October meeting, and 222 attended in November.

Ford said the Faculty would vote on the following four questions:

* To what degree undergraduates should be required to take General Education courses to satisfy their distribution requirement? (Here Ford lists four options which range from permitting only Gen Ed courses to satisfy the requirement to allowing the undergraduate to take either departmental of Gen Ed courses.)

* Should the Doty Committee's report be endorsed as far as its program?

* Should the Administrative structure and incentives proposed by the Doty report be adopted?

* Should the Faculty adopt the provisions of chapter six of the Doty report, which would place the advanced standing program, the freshman seminars, and General Education Ahf, under the Gen Ed committee
