The varsity track team led Yale by two points going into the final event Sunday, but the Elis Wendell Mottley ran away with the mile relay on the final leg to give Yale a 76-73 win over the Crimson at New Haven.
The usually strong Crimson field men were outshone by their Eli counterparts, but the runners made up for it with a surprisingly strong showing that kept Harvard in the meet down to the last race.
Art Doten won the hammer throw as expected for the Crimson, but Bulldogs unexpectedly took the second and third positions behind Doten's 176 ft., 9 3/4 in toss. In the broad jump Heptagonal champion Jim Axtell once again beat out Chris Ohiri and Aggrey Awori with a leap of 24 ft, 2 1/2 in.
The biggest shock of all for Harvard came in the discus, where George Levendis of Yale outthrew Heptagonals champion John Bakkensen, 167 ft., 11 in. to 166 ft., 1 3/4 in.
Harvard Makes Comeback
But Harvard came bark in the events where it was least expected. John Parker, running the quarter mile for the first time this season, defeated teammate Gage McAfee in the time of 49.5. Mottley stayed out of the quarter to enter the 100-yard dash. Jay Mahaney won the pole vault with a leap of 13 feet, John Ogden swept the 880-yd, run in 1:56.2, followed by Ed Meehan and Keit's Chiappa.
Each side had a double winner Awori, running against Mottley in the 100-yd, dash, beat out the Yale star in 9.8 seconds, tying a Harvard record. He then came back to take the 220-yd. dash in 20.8.
Yale's Bobby Mack was the Elis' only double winner, taking the mile in 4:13.7 ahead of Meehan, and the two-mile in 9:14.6, with Ed Hamlin second and Bill Crain third.
In the 120-yd high hurdles, both Awori and Hack Hatch hit hurdles and fell, but Jack Spitzberg came in second behind Bill Elippen of Yale, who was timed in 14.4.
Other Harvard winners were Hatch in the 440-yd, hurdles, and Ohiri with a triple jump of 47 ft., 11 in. For Yale, Jerry Hinkle won the javelin, with Harvard's Hinkle won the javelin, with Harvard's Peeter Lamp third; Sam Streidert led a Bulldog sweep of the high jump with a 6 ft. 6 1/2 in leap; and Chuck Mercein won the shotput over Art Croasdale with a mighty 58 ft., 2 in heave.
The first and second-place finishers in each event will represent Harvard and Yale in a meet with Oxford and Cambridge this June.
