A better B.U. team than usual didn't stop the varsity track team from trouncing the Terriers, 76 to 33, last night in Briggs Cage. The outstanding performance of the evening was turned in by a freshman, Olney Croasdale, who set a new University indoor shot put mark, as the Yardlings triumphed, 84 to 15.

Croasdale's titanic heave of 55 ft., 11 3/4 in, came on the first official attempt of his college career. It overshadowed the efforts of the varsity's Rick DeLone, who hurled the 16-lb, ball 55 ft., 2 1/2 in, for a new varsity indoor record.

Varsity captain Mark Mullin broke even with Terrier Art Freeman in two rip-roaring battles. In the mile, Freeman took an early lead, and dogged it through a 70.0 440. Mullin blew by him soon after, and won by 20 yards in 4:19.9.

Freeman got his revenge later in the 1000. The Crimson's Eddie Meehan set the early pace, and then Mullin took over. But Freeman caught the Crimson captain with 100 yards to go and beat him by a healthy margin. Freeman's time, a meet record, was an excellent 2:14.6.

John Thomas of B.U. won the high hurdles in a slow 5.4, and finished third in the dash before retiring for the night. The Crimson's Jim Leath took the dash in a good 4.6.

Beckwith Double Winner

The varsity's Marty Beckwith was the meet's only double winner, capturing the high jump at 6 ft., 2 in., and the broad jump at 22 ft., 11 3/4 in. Other first-place finishers for the Crimson were Ted Bailey with 57 ft., 1/2 in. in the weight, Greg Baldwin with 10:51 in the two-mile-plus-one-lap, a special event running last night only, and Jay Mahaney with 12 ft., 6 in. in the pole vault.

Ed Tantorski of B.U. upset the varsity's Don Kirkland in a fast 1:14.6 600. Kirkland ran 1:15.0, and just edged out Terrier Bill Havlich for second.

Another star for the Yardlings was Ugandan Aggrey Awori. Awori took the dash in 4.6, and tied the Cage and freshman records with a 5.2 clocking in the hurdles. Tom Niepp of B.U. won the 1000 in 2:17.5, breaking Meehan's freshman Cage mark.
