LINING THEM UP

Whipping Boys

Cast in the role of whipping boy for the varsity every week, the junior varsity football squad can't even assume a personality of its own when it takes the field Friday afternoon.

One game it uses Princeton's offense, running from a single wing and ripping off buck-lateral plays. Another game it works from Columbia's T-formation.

Monday through Thursday, Coach Norm Shepard's boys go down into the "blood-pit" to practice with Lloyd Jordan's varsity players, giving them a prevue of the offense they'll be bucking on Saturday. But, Shepard said, "We battle the varsity every day and when it comes time for our game, we're kind of battered."

Many Men Back

Tomorrow, the Junior varsity takes on its first opponent, Nichols Junior College. Shepard can't--or won't--say too much about his team, except that there are a flock of men back from last year's squad and up from the freshman team. Shepard hasn't seen much of his squad, and what he has seen has been partly Springfield, partly Columbia, partly Washington University.

Shepard did say, however, that men will be going both ways, at least for Friday's encounter. Although over 40 men turned out for jayvee practice, including every member of last year's squad not taken by graduation or the varsity, Shepard prefers a limited substitution system to two platoons.

At the ends Shepard will start sophomore Wally Bregman and senior Dave Silverman, and a pair of sophomores, Stan Pfahl and Bill Maloney will open at the tackles. Fred Horween and Tony Caimi, two juniors who saw a good deal of action last year, will be at the quards, while senior Bud Vonderlage, who was out all of last season with a dislocated shoulder, will play at center.

Its a toss-up, Shepard says, between sophomore Joe Conzelman and senior Walt Greeley for the quarterback position. Conzelman played with the Yardlings last year, while Greeley quarter-backed the Winthrop House football team. Sophomores Bob Zuege and senior Al Finney will see action at the halfback posts, while senior Al Kenney, at fullback, rounds out Shepard's squad.
