2. Schlesinger signed an anti-Communist party for the New Dealers' organization, Americans for Democratic Action, on June 8, 1947. In this statement, he swore that he was not a member of the Communist party.
Schlesinger, a Pulitzer Prize wfunner in history, declared that he was not surprised by Case's attack. Every kind of smear and lie will probably he used in the next five weeks. This will be an extremely duly campaign, and I imagine I'll in for my share of punishment.
The associate professor went on to declare that he had never met or spoken to Case, and that he could see no other reason for the attack than a desperate attempt by the Republicans to use smear methods to stem what Schlesinger termed "the Democratic movement."
Despite Case's charge that a vote for Stevenson would be a vote for Schlesinger as an adviser, Schlesinger reiterated his intention to return to the University next term.
Other Charges Made
The associate professor has been attacked several other times in the past two months. Senator Nixon made frequent references to his "leftist leanings," while the Chicago Tribune has called him a radical and termed him an "aging boy wonder ."
On the other hand the New York Daily Compass, liberal left wing newspaper, has charged Schlesinger with being 'too far to the right" and compared him to Nixon
