Eleven Outshines Army in Stirring 22-21 Win

At 4:34 of the second period, tailback Bill Healey and wingback Tulenko combined forces to put the varsity back into the game. Starting a drive on the Harvard 33, Healey threw a pass to Tulenko which covered 35 yards to the Army 30. Two more carries by Healey and one by fullback Tom Ossman put the ball on the 10, where Tulenko threw a wingback reverse pass to Paul Crowley in the end zone. The play, incidentally, was one of Blaik's favorites when he was coaching at Dartmouth. Montieth added the extra point from placement to tie the score, 7 to 7.

Shortly afterward, the Crimson went ahead to stay. Army tried a punt from its own 25 and Hardy broke through to block it. The ball rolled loose in the end zone, where Attaya fell on it for a safety. The varsity added another score a few moments later, when another wingback reverse pass, Tulenko to tailback Dusty Burke, moved the ball to the Army 3. Culver, who started the game by carrying seven consecutive times, dived over from the one. Montieth missed the extra point.

Army, trailing now, 15 to 7, scored on the last play before the half, aided by a peculiar interference penalty, seen only, apparently, by the officials. After the Vann-Attaya pass was ruled complete on the Harvard 25, Vann hit end Ray Tensfeldt for the score. Reich added the extra point.

Burke Scores, Fumbles

Army fumbled the kick-off to open the second half and guard Joe Shaw recovered on the Cadet 26. Ossman, Tulenko, Jerry Blitz, and Culver took turns in moving the ball to the one, where Burke swept right end for the score. Burke fumbled in the end zone, where guard Art Pappas fell on it, but apparently Burke had possession of the ball long enough. Montieth then stepped in to kick the very vital extra point.

Army wasn't through yet and tallied its last touchdown with about three minutes remaining. The Cadets pushed the Crimson deep in its own territory and when Gil O'Neil tried to kick out, the punt was blocked and recovered on the Harvard five. Left halfback Carl Guess took it over the very next play and Reich kicked the point--but it wasn't quite enough.

The two teams were at mid-field when the game ended
